(G)I-DLE’s Soyeon Show Support for LGBT Friend + Women Desiring Sex Openly

In an interview, (G)I-DLE’s Soyeon mentioned the double standard when it comes to women desiring sex and LGBT support.

On July 25, Cosmopolitan Korea published its recent pictorial with (G)I-DLE’s Soyeon and an accompanying interview. Here, Soyeon not only discussed her relationship with fellow (G)I-DLE members, but also revealed her creative process and mentioned social issues and standards.

In particular, when asked about her attitude towards creation, the female idol said, “I always try to sing honestly and express my various emotions freely.”

She then mentioned an LGBT friend, adding, “A friend of mine came out recently, but I don’t really care about that. I just think, ‘He said he likes men, she said she likes women, so what?’ I don’t want to hide who I am. I want to be confident about myself as a human being, and I want others to be like that too. I want everyone to enjoy everything they deserve as a human being.”

Soyeon also discussed (G)I-DLE song “Wife”, which was previously criticized for “vulgar lyrics” with sexual undertones, at the same time called out the double standards when it comes to women expressing their sexual desires.

“There are so many songs about sex by male artists, especially male hip-hop musicians. But in Korea, when female musicians sing about sex, they express it metaphorically and indirectly. But women who desire sex aren’t bad or wrong, right? I think all women have their own desires and individuality, and I wanted to express a female ‘character’ who is active in such desires at least once”, the female idol said, adding, “In Korea, female musicians rarely write or sing such songs. Just as there are many genres and characters in novels and movies, there can be such speakers in music. There were many reactions that the lyrics of ‘Wife’ were dirty, but I don’t think sexual acts are dirty. It’s human nature.”

“It is not a crime or dirty for women to desire sex or sing about it. My actual personality is not the type to talk about sex freely, but even if there is a woman like that, I don’t want to say that she is vulgar or dirty. That’s just her personality. I think it’s more sinister to hide one’s desires and appeal to them subtly, and I want to respect anyone who speaks out”, Soyeon also continued.

Additionally, Soyeon also described herself as “a person who has no prejudices”, explaining, “People around me feel comfortable coming out to me. Even if I am attracted to a woman, I don’t think I would think, ‘Oh, why am I attracted to women?’ That is why I try not to limit myself when I write songs.”
