From Kim Hye Soo to Ha Ji Won, top actresses’ comeback dramas are deemed disappointing or shabby?

Famous actresses such as Kim Hye Soo, Kim Sun Ah, and Ha Ji Won are returning one after another, but their work are facing complaints.

The viewer ratings of tvN’s drama “The Queen’s Umbrella”, which received much attention even before its premiere as it is Kim Hye Soo’s comeback work, are rising day by day, but on the other hand, it is caught up in a controversy over historical inaccuracies.

True to the nickname of the Joseon version of “SKY Castle”, Jung Jeon (played by Kim Hye Soo) and her concubines are sucked into a fierce education war to put her sons on the throne against the backdrop of the royal family in the society of Joseon. However, viewers and historians raised the issue that some settings in “The Queen’s Umbrella” were similar to concubines’ struggles set in China rather than Joseon.

Viewers have learned through tvN’s drama “Mr. Queen” and SBS drama “Joseon Exorcist” that excessively distorted interpretation of history can be poisonous. As the issue of historical inaccuracy and the Chinese-style story in a K-drama surfaced once again, many viewers claim they are disappointed with Kim Hye Soo, a likable actress.

Kim Sun Ah is also returning to JTBC’s drama “The Empire” after three years, but she could not avoid criticism. The drama receives attention for the naked affair of Ahn Jae Wook, Joo Se Bin, and Song Young Chang, rather than Kim Sun Ah’s acting and the hypocrisy-filled secret of Kim Sun Ah’s family that caused all the events in the story. “The Empire” is even stigmatized as “Empire of Infidelity” and “Empire of Body.”

Even with such provocative material, the viewership ratings of “The Empire” are not good. It recorded the lowest rating of 1.8% (according to Nielsen Korea) in episode 11, in which the truth about the family’s secrets and the murder mystery is slowly being revealed. Therefore, it is difficult to expect a big rebound in ratings of “The Empire” with only one episode left before the finale.

Ha Ji-won’s comeback work, KBS 2TV’s drama ‘Curtain Call‘ was first aired on October 31st while many competing dramas and entertainment programs were canceled in the aftermath of the Itaewon disaster. As a result, the viewership rating of the first episode reached 7.2%, but fell to 3.1% in the second episode.

Of course, the impact of the broadcasting time being delayed by about an hour due to the broadcast of the KBO League Korean Series cannot be ignored, but the ratings, which fell 4.1%, is inevitably shabby.

Meanwhile, in addition to Kim Hye Soo, Kim Sun-ah and Ha Ji-won, several actors are preparing to return to the small screen. Lee Young-ae, who returned to the small screen after four years, is actively reviewing “Maestra”. Kim Hee-ae, who caused a stir with JTBC’s “The World of the Married”, has been cast for the political drama “Storm”. Kim Tae-hee has been offered to star in tvN’s drama “House with a Madang” based on the novel of the same name.

A series of disappointing results by top actresses revealed that the actor’s simple “name value” didn’t match the TV series’ box office formula. Nowadays, when the eyes and ears of the viewers have become more demanding, people are paying attention to whether the actors can deliver works that live up to expectations.
