Emilia Perez tells the story of Mexican drug lord Manitas’s escape. He hires lawyer Rita to help orchestrate his getaway to evade punishment. To eliminate all evidence, Manitas decides to undergo gender reassignment surgery and live a new life. However, deep down, the drug lord has long wanted to become a woman.
In the film, Selena Gomez plays the wife of the main character Manitas del Monte (played by Karla SofÃa Gascón). Critics have praised her performance, applauding her for portraying both the strong and vulnerable aspects of the character.
Selena Gomez said she was immediately drawn to the script. She shared, “This is a captivating, heartbreaking film that truly moved me. I also love the songs in the film. I find them really wonderful.”
