YouTube spreads fake news: from Ko Woo Rim and Kim Yuna to Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin’s divorce rumors

Fake news from YouTube has been spreading rapidly nowadays, causing damage to celebrities.

Recently, a video was uploaded on YouTube claiming that Hyun Bin had incurred substantial gambling losses during his overseas trips, which led to Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin’s divorce. While Hyun Bin’s agency denied the allegations, the video even contains details of witnesses from local residents.

Although it is absurd, the video is spreading indiscriminately with 400,000 views. In addition, fake news surrounding Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin are being reproduced numerous times online.

In response, the agencies of both sides said, “It is clearly fake news. We are continuously monitoring fake news internally. We have requested YouTube to delete the video, and will take action regarding the content.”

The damage caused by fake news is not new. Forestella’s Ko Woo Rim and Kim Yuna, former national figure skater, were also damaged. A YouTuber was spreading fake news that due to Ko Woo Rim’s extramarital affair, Kim Yuna decided to get a divorce. The same YouTuber even claimed that Kim Yuna, who is in her second week of pregnancy, decided not to have children.

Ko Woo Rim’s agency has decided to take a zero tolerance legal action to prevent secondary damage.

On the other hand, Choi Soo Jong and Ha Hee Ra were also damaged by fake news. In particular, there have been YouTube videos claiming that Ha Hee Ra made the decision to divorce due to Choi Soo Jong’s business failure and extramarital affair. Ha Hee Ra and Choi Soo Jong immediately refuted it as “groundless” and heralded a strong legal response without mercy.

Nevertheless, rumors are spreading that singer Song Ga In and Kim Ho Joong are getting married, and that senior actors such as Kim Young Ok and Park Geun Hyung have passed away. Due to the SNS profit structure, where advertising costs increase depending on the number of views, the level of fake news from YouTube is gradually exceeding the limit. Critics point out that cases of damage continue to occur due to the low level of punishment.
