Will 14-Year Variety Show “Running Man” Be Able To Make A Breakthrough From Its Current Crisis?

The long-lasting “Running Man”, which has run for 14 years, has begun to reveal its limits as the members are shaken by the fact that their energy is no longer the same as before.

SBS’s entertainment program “Running Man” broadcast on December 24th began calmly with Kim Dong-hyun making a special appearance for the Christmas special. The cast appeared with five members, including Yoo Jae-suk, Kim Jong-kook, Yang Se-chan, Haha, and Song Ji-hyo, for the first time.

Earlier, Ji Seok-jin decided to take a break to receive treatment for his worsening health conditions. Yoo Jae-suk then announced Ji Seok-jin’s break, adding “I hope there’s nothing serious”. Yang Se-chan, who recently underwent a procedure for health reasons, made a bitter comment, saying “There are only four people in normal condition among us”.

Of course, Ji Seok-jin is only taking a temporary hiatus, not withdrawing from the program and Yang Se-chan will naturally solve his issues. However, the real problem is that even after Ji Seok-jin returns, it’s still hard for “Running Man” to raise its energy like before.

“Running Man” was originally a program in which the cast carried out running and chasing missions with the guests. However, as the members’ health and physical conditions have weakened after 14 years, it is not easy to do such missions anymore. Even before changes in the cast lineup, the energy of “Running Man” has already decreased.

The chemistry of the members, including Yoo Jae-suk, Yang Se-chan, Haha, Song Ji-hyo, Jeon So-min, and Lee Kwang-soo, seems to have been the greatest driving force for them to continue the program for years. However, as some members decided to leave the show, “Running Man” is facing a crisis again. Compared to “Running Man”, MBC’s “I Live Alone” marked its 10th anniversary this year and is still enjoying its heyday by taking advantage of the cast’s chemistry and inviting guests who can reach out to the viewers closely.

Even though the two programs have different content and formats, it is true that “Running Man” has failed to make changes as they already missed the timing. Recruiting new members is essential to revitalize the energy of the team.

The efforts and achievements of “Running Man” throughout the past 14 years are undeniable, but this variety show genre is no longer popular now. However, it is still unknown whether “Running Man” will overcome this hard time again and make a breakthrough in the new year.
