Unexpected consequences after ‘Snowdrop’ aired the first 2 episodes: Not only Jisoo was boycotted, but BLACKPINK was also criticized

The actions of BLACKPINK’s members after ‘Snowdrop’ has caused an outrage.

On the evening of December 18, at the time of episode 1 of “Snowdrop” airing, 2 BLACKPINK members including Rosé and Lisa uploaded Instagram Story posts showing them watching the movie live together. Earlier, on the day of Snowdrop’s press conference, Rosé and Jennie also posted photos on Instagram Story to support Jisoo as well as her new series. At that time, netizens used to criticize them a lot, but just a few days later, BLACKPINK continued to publicly cheer for Jisoo despite all the controversies of historical distortion surrounding “Snowdrop“.

An article from Joy News 24 that was just released on the morning of December 20 frankly criticized the actions of the BLACKPINK members: “What is more annoying is that other artists are voicing support (Snowdrop) through their SNS even though they know very well about the controversies of historical distortion surrounding its content. The members of BLACKPINK are constantly uploading to their Instagram Story posts supporting Jisoo’s appearance in “Snowdrop”. They are forgetting the basic fact that they themselves are a global K-pop girl group but openly promote for international fans a series that is suspected of distorting their country’s history.”

Not only BLACKPINK, Joy News 24‘s article also mentions Jung Yoojin – who takes on the role of Jang Han Na, an air defense investigation agent of the national security agency in “Snowdrop“. Jung Yoojin shared on her Instagram the compliments that her acquaintances sent after watching the first episode of “Snowdrop“. Talking about this action, Joy News 24 frankly stated, “In a situation where the victims of the national security agency are still living in emotional pain, Jung Yoojin’s actions of sharing an image of an employee of this agency on SNS is a tragedy stemming from a lack of understanding of history. She should be ashamed of her actions.”

Considering that BLACKPINK is one of the top girl groups in Kpop today and how influential they are not only in Korea but also around the world, the Korean online community is feeling more disappointed and outraged than ever.  Many posts on current online forums claim that they have lost all affection for all BLACKPINK members, even calling for a boycott of all things related to this group in the future.

  • What’s wrong with fans? They know how influential they are but still posting on Story, it is enough to get criticized……”
  • “This group is really over now. They will be labeled as a country-selling group for the rest of their lives. What makes me angry the most is because the way they promote makes BLACKPINK’s international fans support this drama unconditionally, no matter how Koreans oppose it”
  • “BLACKPINK’s influence is so great that their act of posting on SNS is even worse. Now international fans are both defending and distorting our country’s history”
  • “A proof that all members are equally empty-headed”
  • “The country-selling group from the drug store… I hope to never see any of their members on Korean TV again”
  • “Boycott everything related to BLACKPINK and YG”
  • “What to expect from a group where most of the members are foreigners? ㅋㅋㅋ Lisa is Thai, Rosé and Jennie spend most of their time abroad. Even the Korean-born and raised Jisoo directly participated in that dramaㅋㅋㅋ”
  • “No matter if they’re foreigners or how long they’ve lived abroad, when they’ve worked in Korea for that long, they should at least have some knowledge of the importance of  the democratic movement.  Even if they didn’t know, when the controversy broke out, they should have realized the problem and not promoted it on SNS.”
  • “This is why learning history is so important! Go abroad and work for the rest of your life~”

The petition to the Blue House asking to ban “Snowdrop” from broadcasting gained over 265,000 signatures as of 2 p.m. on December 20 (KST), just one day after it was posted. The figure is still rapidly increasing, demonstrating how outraged Koreans are over the drama.
