“They’re still minors…” English interpreter points out the sensationalism of NewJeans’ “Cookie” lyrics

On August 17th, a video titled “NewJeans Cookie lyrics sensationalism controversy, undeniable conclusive evidence (ft. simultaneous interpreter)” was uploaded on the YouTube channel Bridge TV.

The YouTuber said, “After listening to the song, I thought it was good at first. But the more I listened to it, the more I thought (its lyrics) weren’t that great. I was worried before making this video. Because NewJeans members are all minors, and they must have made their debut with a lot of effort. However, it’s unfortunate and disgraceful that such a controversy is attached to them.

He explained, “I made this video because I wanted everyone to be cautious when giving lyrics to underage singers. ‘Cookie’ here refers to a woman’s genitals. To say no to this is too blindfolded. It’s like covering the sky with a palm. If you play the lyrics of this song to someone who can write and speak English comfortably and ask if it sounds provocative and sensational, they’ll definitely agree. The lyrics are very sexy.

He added, “The agency said that it was about baking cookies, but I think that is a ridiculous explanation. Also, the lyrics say ‘cookie’ in singularity instead of ‘cookies’. The cookies we eat are ‘cookies’. These are outright sexual lyrics. They are all sexual metaphors.”

He continued, “It doesn’t matter which adults came up with such lyrics. The problem is that the kids are singing them. Their label became controversial as soon as the group debuted. It negatively affected the kids and is so wrong. It seems like a violation of morals. I hope it’s not going to be like this with their next album. I hope New Jeans doesn’t sing sexual lyrics about women at least until they become adults.”

Netizens left comments:

  • He was not just analyzing the lyrics, but I felt that he gave advice and really felt sorry for New Jeans
  • It’s so sad to see minors singing such provocative lyrics
  • Thank you for explaining your point of view as an English speaker
  • The agency completely mistreated young girls for noise marketing
  • Just by releasing a song called Cookie, they definitely went for noise marketing
