“The Music Scene in Korea is in Crisis”, Said K-pop Soloist

A K-pop soloist expressed disappointment in the current state of the music scene in Korea and the idol industry in particular.

Recently, soloist HOLLAND garnered attention for his scathing comment on the current status of the music scene in Korea.

In particular, the solo artist mentioned how the entire industry is focusing on idols – from entertainment agencies to advertisers. As a result, other genres and non-idol artists are struggling as they receive no booking, even having to sell their songs to K-pop artists.

“The music scene in Korea, along with solo artists, is in crisis and transitional”, Holland also said, adding, “While this is considered natural, as someone in this industry, I find it distressing”.

“Many artists rooted in R&B, jazz, and electronic music are either selling songs to K-pop artists to make a living or finding other jobs to earn money and invest in their own music. I’m doing the same. And many artists are giving up on making their own music”, the soloist explained.

According to Holland, K-pop agencies also rarely allow idols to grow as artists, and instead just focus on following the trends, from “copying popular music from abroad” to “focusing solely on making money by creating fanatical emotions akin to pseudo-romantic relationships”.

“It’s truly lamentable”, he concluded, showing deep disappointment.

In fact, the situation in the K-pop scene has been severe, with more achievements but less talents, as proven by the recent rise in controversies regarding lacking live-singing skills of LE SSERAFIM and ILLIT.

Some have credited this decline to HYBE, to the point the key word “HYBE K-pop Destroyer” started to trend on SNS.
