“The Glory” actor Jung Sung Il, “I wanted to play Jeon Jae Joon… I like the nickname ‘Tony Leung of Daehak-ro’”
Actor Jung Sung Il, who appeared in the hit drama “The Glory” as Ha Do Young, talked about himself on “Newsroom”.
Appearing on the April 15th broadcast of JTBC’s “Newsroom”, Jung Sung Il introduced himself as a person who has more pleasant aspects than just seriousness, saying “I often make people laugh.”
Jung Sung Il made his face widely known to the public after portraying Ha Do Young, a businessman and Park Yeon Jin’s husband, in Netflix’s drama “The Glory” (written by Kim Eun Sook/ directed by Ahn Gil Ho).
“The Glory” tells about the revenge plan carefully designed by Moon Dong Eun (Song Hye Kyo), whose soul was broken due to the experience of school violence during her childhood, and people who fall into the whirlwinds of her revenge.
When asked if there is any line that still makes him think of, Jung Sung Il replied, “I still remember what I said to Yeon Jin asking about Jae Joon (Park Sung Hoon) after discovering the two’s relationship.”
In the meantime, regarding his recent pitching as a fan of Hanwha Eagles, the actor boasted, “My pitching form is already unique”, adding “Many professional players also throw like this. However, it’s still rare”.
Revealing himself as a big fan of Hanwha Eagles, Jung Sung Il shared, “I am also a fan of baseball player Ryu Hyun Jin. Actually, I just love baseball so much. Hanhwa has not won a championship since 1999. I put the number 99 on my back, hoping they will get a win like in 1999. I hope the day when Hanhwa wins the championship and all fans can be happy together will come.”
Regarding his family’s reaction to the huge success of “The Glory”, the actor confessed, “They didn’t express much. They just said ‘You did great’. They don’t brag about me or say things like ‘My brother is Jung Sung Il’.”
“The shoes that appeared in ‘The Glory’ were ones I got from my mother-in-law after his marriage. I asked the director if I could use that shoes since there was a scene in ‘The Glory’ that only showed the shoes”, he said.
As for his nickname “Prince of Daehangno”, Jung Sung Il smiled and said, “I’m already old and I’m also not the prince of Daehangno. There are many many cool and young friends in Daehangno”, adding “I prefer the nickname ‘Tony Leung of Daehak-ro’.”
When the MC mentioned his next project, which is the musical “Interview”, the actor commented, “It’s an unexpected move”. He explained, “I really love the stage. To me, the stage is like a source of acting materials and nutrients”, adding “After appearing on the TV, I would continue to fill the stage. There are many excellent and talented friends in Daehangno, who are even better than me. I hope everyone will come to see our performances.”
Regarding the roles he wants to challenge in the future, Jung Sung Il said, “I’ve actually done these roles many times on the stage, but I still want to try a TV character that is quite funny and pleasant. Viewers who have seen me through OTT content may think I’m ‘cold’, so I want to try a more friendly character.”
He continued, “Actually, I think playing bad characters like Jeon Jae Joon is also a great idea. When I read the script of ‘The Glory,’ I really wanted to play Jeon Jae Joon. I think it would be fun to act such an intense and raw character.”
The actor added, “I hope the public shows a positive reaction when they hear my name, like exclaiming ‘Ah! That guy is good’. I want to act better, but I don’t know how to do it yet. I think I need to keep acting to find out the way.”
