Netflix’s “The Glory” dominated in the first half of the year and Disney+’s Moving” in the second half

Netflix’s “The Glory” Part 2 was the biggest hit for the first half of this year. “The Glory” tells the story of a woman who avenges the people who bullied her in the past. “The Glory” Part 1 was released on Dec. 30 last year, and “The Glory” Part 2 was released on March 10 this year.

Immediately after its release, the drama became a syndrome in both Korea and other countries. Notably, the drama was watched for 124.46 million hours during the first three days after Part 2 was released, ranking first in both the English and non-English series and movie categories on Netflix. It was no.1 in 23 countries including Korea, and was in the top 10 in 79 countries.

The Glory

Song Hye-kyo reunited with writer Kim Eun-sook after “Descendants of the Sun,” which also gathered much attention. In addition, “The Glory” won Best TV Drama, while Song Hye-kyo Best Actress TV Drama Category, Lim Ji-yeon, Best Supporting Actress TV Drama Category at the 59th Baeksang Arts Awards.

Disney+ started the year with season 2 of “Casino.” The series was followed by “Call It Love,” “Race,” “Shadow Detective II,” “Moving,” “Han River Police,” “The Worst of Evil” and “Vigilante.” While the Netflix series “The Glory” dominated the first half of the year, Disney+ definitely took over the second half with “Moving.”

With an investment of 50 billion won (about 9.8 million U.S. dollars), “Moving” is based on a webtoon of the same name by Kang Pool. Kang even participated in the screenplay writing. Many top actors and actresses, including Ryu Seung-ryong, Han Hyo-joo, Jo In-sung, Ryu Seung-bum, and Cha Tae-hyun, appeared in the movie. “Moving” is an action series that tells the story of children hiding their superpowers and their parents hiding their painful pasts.

After the final episode of “Moving” was released, it became the most watched series in Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Southeast Asia. Thanks to “Moving,” the number of Disney+ subscribers increased by 7 million from the previous quarter to 150.2 million.

In addition, “Moving” was nominated for the 29th annual Critics’ Choice Awards in the United States on Jan. 14, 2024 (local time). The Critics’ Choice Awards is an annual award ceremony organized by the American Broadcasting and Film Critics Association (BFCA) to honor the achievements of the best films and series.
