Solidarity Against Disability Discrimination Releases Stance Regarding IU’s “Love Wins All” Music Video

On January 29th, the Solidarity Against Disability Discrimination (SADD) shared a review titled “The real Love Wins All”, expressing their position regarding IU’s new music video.

SADD said, “We fully understand the many debates and criticisms surrounding ‘Love Wins All’ music video. Aside from such controversies and criticisms, we want to expand social interest in human rights for people with disabilities, and we would like to express our concerns with citizens and IU regarding the way to address various social minorities in art content.”

They continued, “We are fighting against something similar to ‘square’ in the music video every morning”, adding “We are struggling against numerous discrimination, hatred and insults not only on the Internet but also in real life, dreaming of a world of liberation for people with disabilities. In this way, we are living in an era of hatred.”

Nevertheless, SADD said, “The ‘camcorder world’ we want to create is not a world in which disabled people try to become non-disabled, but a world where disabled people also move around, work and live together with other people in communities. In addition, we hope to make a world where sexual minorities laborers, and all social minorities in the world are recognized and respected. We are going out to the streets and subway stations today to turn this ‘world in the camcorder’ into real life. We also notice that the world has begun to change as we take action”.

Lastly, they added, “We hope that our path and IU’s path will someday lead to creating a world where no one is excluded so that we can shout out for The real ‘Love wins all’ together”.

Earlier on January 24th after IU released the music video for “Love Wins All”, the female singer was embroiled in controversy over disparaging disabled people. The MV shows IU and BTS’s V fighting and running away from ‘square’ (discrimination and oppression) in a post-apocalyptic world.

Some people pointed out that certain scenes in the music video depicted disabled people in a disparaging manner, claiming that the direction of the video ideally looked at the love of non-disabled couples through the camcorder.

In response, “Love Wins All” director Uhm Tae-hwa explained that ‘square’ means discrimination against the main characters, and could also be interpreted as various forms of discrimination and oppression in real life. He explained that the scene in which the two are seen flying into the air symbolizes the ability to break prejudices and oppression to fly freely.
