Prosecution seeks arrest warrant again for Yoo Ah In

Repetition of the ‘request for detention warrant

On Sep 18th, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office’s Violent Crime Investigation Unit requested a preliminary arrest warrant for actor Yoo Ah In (real name Uhm Hong Sik) and his acquaintance A.

The warrant was sought on charges related to the Narcotics Control Act, including the use of psychotropic drugs, destruction of evidence, as well as aiding and abetting a fugitive. This comes approximately 4 months after the previous arrest warrant was rejected by the court.

According to the prosecution, Yoo Ah In allegedly engaged in illegal drug use, primarily through “hospital shopping” for medical anesthesia drugs for cosmetic procedures, obtaining and using various medical narcotics worth approximately 500 million won over about 200 occasions since 2020. He is also accused of obtaining sleeping pills illegally in another person’s name on multiple occasions and taking part in drug use, including cocaine and marijuana, with A and others in the United States last January.

The prosecution claimed that Yoo Ah In, along with others, actively interfered with the judicial process by sharing real-time updates on the investigation, destroying evidence, as well as attempting to influence and threaten witnesses. This led to charges of obstructing the legal process.

Yoo Ah In faces a total of 7 different drug-related charges. Originally, he was accused of using propofol, marijuana, ketamine, cocaine and zolpidem. However, last June, prosecutors discovered evidence of him using two additional psychotropic drugs, midazolam and alprazolam, leading to further charges under the Narcotics Control Act.

The investigation is ongoing, and the prosecution plans to continue their inquiry into Yoo Ah In, A and other domestic suspects, as well as those who fled abroad in connection with the case.
