On January 11th (local time), AFCA officially announced the list of winners for 2023, through its official blog.
According to the announcement, Lee Sun-kyun was selected as the recipient of the Special Award. AFCA mentioned the late actor’s works, including ‘Parasite,’ ‘Sleep,’ and ‘Project Silence,’ along with the phrase “In memoriam of the life and works of Lee Sun-kyun.”
Established in 2005, the Austin Film Critics Association is a film critics association in the United States, and its awards are considered as one of the critics’ awards that can influence the following year’s Academy (Oscar) Awards.
Meanwhile, in October of the previous year, Lee Sun-kyun was embroiled in suspicions of drug use, but the urine and body precision test results came back negative. Later, on December 27th, Lee Sun-kyun was found collapsed inside a vehicle on the streets of Seongbuk-gu, Seoul. At that time, he was unconscious, and the fire department, responding to the police’s joint request, estimated that Lee Sun-kyun had died around 10:30 am KST that day.
Subsequently, the ‘Solidarity of Cultural and Artistic Figures,’ consisting of 29 cultural and artistic organizations, released a statement on January 12th titled ‘Demands of Cultural and Artistic Figures Facing the Death of Actor Lee Sun-kyun.’
