After clearing his name in the controversy surrounding allegations that he had been romantically involved with the late actress Kim Sae Ron while she was still a minor, Kim Soo Hyun has begun preparing for his return to the entertainment industry, nearly one year and four months after the scandal erupted. On July 15, the actor participated in a photo shoot for Philippine clothing brand BENCH, showcasing the enduring star power that has made him one of Korea’s biggest Hallyu celebrities.
When Kim Soo Hyun held a press conference in March last year to address the allegations, however, public opinion was far less favorable. Although he tearfully denied all accusations, skepticism continued to grow. His decision to personally appear before the media while refusing to take questions from reporters led many to compare him to Park Yoo Chun and Jung Joon Young, both of whom had previously held emotional press conferences proclaiming their innocence before later being exposed as having lied. Because both Park Yoo Chun and Jung Joon Young ultimately became infamous for making false statements while blocking questions from the press, Kim Soo Hyun faced criticism for holding what many initially viewed as another “one-sided” press conference.
However, unlike those cases, Kim Soo Hyun’s emotional denial has since been supported by the investigation. Authorities found that much of the evidence presented by YouTube channel Garosero Research Institute and its operator Kim Se Ui had been fabricated. According to the police investigation, the mobile messenger conversations allegedly exchanged between Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Sae Ron, which were revealed during Kim Se Ui’s press conference, had been manipulated. Investigators also concluded that an audio recording attributed to Kim Sae Ron was generated using artificial intelligence rather than being authentic. Kim Se Ui has since been indicted and detained on charges including defaming Kim Soo Hyun. He is currently being held at the Seoul Detention Center while legal proceedings continue.
As a result, Kim Soo Hyun is now being mentioned alongside celebrities such as G-Dragon and Lee Jin Wook, both of whom were eventually cleared after facing highly publicized allegations. Although the three stars endured significant emotional distress while attempting to prove their innocence, many observers believe their cases serve as reminders of the dangers of online rumors, speculation, and public witch hunts. Following his own acquittal in a previous investigation, G-Dragon famously emphasized the phrase “justice ultimately prevails,” while Lee Jin Wook publicly showed support by liking the message, drawing widespread attention at the time.
Now appearing to have regained his confidence, Kim Soo Hyun is reportedly looking toward a full-scale comeback through his next major project. Industry attention has once again shifted to Disney+’s original series Knock-Off, a production reportedly worth approximately ₩60 billion, whose release was indefinitely postponed amid the controversy. Although Disney+ has yet to announce an official premiere date, many expect Knock-Off to become the project that marks Kim Soo Hyun’s long-awaited return following the conclusion of the allegations.
