(G)I-DLE’s Soyeon Became a K-pop Idol Because of “This Group”

On January 30, the 99th episode of KBS’s YouTube content “Leemujin Service”, which features (G)I-DLEs Soyeon, was published on the YouTube channel “KBS Kpop”. Here, Soyeon disclosed how she got inspired to become a K-pop idol.

In particular, Soyeon first confessed that her first interaction with music was neither through singing or rapping, since she started doing ballet as a little girl.

“I was into ballet when I was little. I won the competitions. But I quit doing ballet while I was in elementary school”, Soyeon confessed, adding that if she wanted to continue ballet, she’d need to enroll into an art high school, leading to her wondering about whether she can continue on this path for the rest of her life.

However, it was during 3rd grade that Soyeon stumbled across “Bad Boy”, a song of BIGBANG, who was extremely popular at the time.

“So I’ve been only listening to ballet music and… when I first listened to BIGBANG’s songs… it hit me. I knew that that’s what I needed to work on. That’s when I was exposed to hip-hop and rapping”, she confessed, revealing that it was BIGBANG who steered her away from ballet and into K-pop.

“I loved K-pop idols’ songs. I loved everything about K-pop and I am here now”, the female idol concluded, citing BIGBANG as a major influence in her decision to become a K-pop idol.

Now, Soyeon is a hitmaker who helps (G)I-DLE achieve huge success on both the domestic and international market. As the group’s main songwriter, the female idol even became an official member of KOMCA – the Korea Music Copyright Association.
