Cultural Controversy Surrounds Disney’s ‘Snow White’ Remake: Potential Public Backlash Similar to ‘The Little Mermaid’

The cultural battle surrounding Disney’s live-action remake of “Snow White” is not stopping.

On August 19th (local time), The Hollywood Reporter reported, “Conservative critics are raising issues with the casting of Latinx actress Rachel Zegler as a character described as having ‘skin as white as snow’ and the transformation of the seven dwarfs into magical creatures of various sizes and genders.”

Rachel Zegler’s derogatory remarks about the original version of Snow White also came to light.

In a September 2022 interview with Variety, Zegler promised that the version of “Snow White” would not be saved by a prince and that she would not dream of true love.

She also stated in an interview with Vanity Fair, “People are joking that our film will become a politically correct Snow White, and yes, it will. Because it was necessary.”

She further elaborated on ExtraTV, “The original cartoon was released in 1937, focusing heavily on her love story. A man stalks her. So, this time we didn’t do that.”

The UK Telegraph published an interview with the son of David Hand, one of the directors of the original 1937 animated “Snow White.”

He commented, “It’s a completely different concept, and I completely disagree. My father and Walt Disney would think the same. Trying something new after having great success in the past is risky.”

He continued, “Their thinking is now too radical. They’re changing the stories, altering the thought processes of the characters. I don’t like any of it. I find what they’ve done to some of these classic films somewhat offensive.”

A video uploaded by a netizen on TikTok has garnered over 10 million views, resonating with many.

He retorted, “Criticizing Disney princesses isn’t feminism. Not all women want to be leaders. Wanting to dream of true love, get married, and stay at home isn’t anti-feminism. None of these things make you less valuable.”

Disney has not officially addressed the controversy and has not commented on the latest situation.
