Comparison of ‘sexually harassed’ DJ Soda’s Japan & Thailand performances spread due to Japanese netizens’ victim blaming

Following DJ Soda’s sexual harassment incident, videos comparing her performances in Thailand and Japan draw attention.

On August 14th, DJ Soda posted some photos of her recent performance on Instagram. She complained, “At the end of my performance at the Music Circus Festival in Osaka, Japan today, I got closer to the audience to interact with them. But people at today’s event kept touching my chest. Not one but several people did that. I was sexually harassed but couldn’t do anything”.

The photos show DJ Soda going near the front row of the stage and some fans reaching out their hands to touch her chest and other body parts.

In this regard, the festival organizer TryHard Japan released an official statement on the 15th, saying “During Soda’s performance at Music Circus 23, there was an incident in which several audiences touched the body of the performer, including her chest”, adding “We plan to identify the perpetrators and take legal actions, such as claiming damages and filing complaints for civil and criminal charges. We will spare no effort to support Soda, the victim in this incident.”

Despite the organizer’s response, some Japanese netizens blamed the incident on the victim, DJ Soda, and her stage costume with high-level exposure.

However, DJ Soda has worn similar revealing outfits at various festivals, not just at this event. During her previous stage in Thailand, the female DJ wore a blue short top and bottom. The audience in front of DJ Soda hyped her performance by raising their hands without touching her body.

Someone even made a video comparing the two situations and it can be clearly seen that Japanese audiences intentionally reached out their hands to touch DJ Soda’s body, while Thai audiences only raised their hands to respond to the DJ’s movements and did not have any physical contact with her.

The comparison video is spreading widely on social media.

Meanwhile, Soda is currently active as a DJ in Korea, Japan, China, and various Southeast Asian countries. Earlier, she drew attention by becoming the first Korean headliner at the Songkran S2O Festival in Songkran Thailand, one of the world’s Top 3 festivals.
