Can Kim Hye-soo stop the dominance of Nam Goong-min’s “One Dollar Lawyer” with “The Queen’s Umbrella”?… Expectations are high for her historical drama return

Actress Kim Hye-soo will return with her first historical drama in 20 years today (October 15th).

Drama fans are raising high expectations for Kim Hye-soo’s transformation as a mother and a queen who enters the royal education war for the sake of her sons in “The Queen’s Umbrella”. Attention is also focused on whether she will be able to interrupt the dominance of Nam Goong-min’s series “One Dollar Lawyer”, which has firmly ranked No.1 in the viewership chart since the airing of its first episode.

tvN’s Saturday-Sunday drama “The Queen’s Umbrella”, which will premiere at 9:10 p.m today (October 15th), depicts the struggles that the Queens face when entering the fierce royal education war to train the troublemaker princes. The story centers around the top 1% education method in Joseon and the court mothers’ passion for education.

In fact, “The Queen’s Umbrella” is arousing more interest as it is known as Kim Hye-soo’s long-awaited historical drama comeback. This is the first time in 9 years that Kim Hye-soo appeared in a historical work since the 2013 film “The Face Reader”. In addition, it’s also her first historical drama after 20 years since “Jang Hee-bin” (2002-2003). Kim Hye-soo played the main character Jang Hee-bin in “Jang Hee-bin” and won the 2003 Daesang.

The Queen's Umbrella

Queen Im Hwa-ryeong played by Kim Hye-soo in “The Queen’s Umbrella” is the main character of the turbulent royal family who struggles with her husband, the King, and her troublemaker princes. Even when playing a Queen that is close to the image in authentic historical dramas, Kim Hye-soo is expected to present a performance that goes back and forth between comedy and seriousness.

Earlier at the production presentation for “The Queen’s Umbrella”, Kim Hye-soo revealed the reason why she chose this work. The actress said, “Everything about ‘The Queen’s Umbrella’ is fresh and new. The story refers to the Joseon Dynasty, but it was composed of fictional characters. Although it was close to traditional materials, the atmosphere of the drama is new. The characters are modern, the script is interesting, the tone and manners are really fresh, and the whole work is very lively with the appearance of many characters”.

Many viewers are also looking forward to this series as it is Kim Hye-soo’s first reunion with veteran actress Kim Hae-sook, whom she worked with in the movie “The Thieves” 10 years ago.

Kim Hye-soo and Kim Hae-sook, who boasted amazing chemistry like Pepsi and chewing gum, will portray an intense battle between Queen Hwa-ryeong and Queen Dowager in “The Queen’s Umbrella”. Both actresses are very excited and enthusiastic about their first reunion in 10 years. In this regard, Kim Hae-sook said, “I immediately applauded when I heard Kim Hye-soo was going to appear in this work. I really like Kim Hye-soo because she’s an outstanding actress, and I was looking forward to meeting her and working with her again”, expressing her affection.

Kim Hye-soo also showed her respect for senior Kim Hae-sook, saying “I achieved the biggest prize”, adding “I felt so thankful when I heard Kim Hae-sook sunbae would also be acting in this drama. Being able to perform with amazing actors is a great driving force for me. I’m always working with deep gratitude.”

tvN’s “The Queen’s Umbrella” will join the competition with SBS’s “One Dollar Lawyer” and MBC’s “The Golden Spoon” this Saturday. Among all Friday-Saturday and Saturday-Sunday dramas, “One Dollar Lawyer” is currently the only work that surpassed 10% viewer rating. In particular, Nam Goong-min is receiving favorable reviews for his passionate performance while leading the story.

Therefore, attention is being paid to whether “The Queen’s Umbrella”, which is about to face strong rivals, will be able to prevent “One Dollar Lawyer” from continuing its dominance. As the last episode of the previous drama “Little Women” ended with the highest rating record of 11%, expectations are higher on whether the historical drama led by trustworthy actress Kim Hye-soo can continue this momentum and take first place on the viewership chart.
