BTS’ V Shares 1st Live Performance of New Song While in Military Service, “Flop” on Korean Charts but International Success

BTS V's new single sparks controversy for underwhelming domestic performance.

V’s First Live Performance of New Song

Recently, BTS’ V released the new solo single FRI(END)S while he’s enlisting. On March 18th, W Korea premiered V’s first live performance of FRI(END)S.

It’s clear that despite his military service, V and his team diligently carried out promotions for the new single. The video by W Korea showcased V’s striking visuals. Without elaborate setups, V stood alone in an office setting, letting his vocals take the spotlight.

Controversial Domestic Chart Performance

However, V’s comeback has sparked mixed reactions. As a top idol, there were high expectations for V to achieve impressive results. Instead of his new song, the more discussed topic was V changing his Instagram profile picture, seemingly synchronized with Jennie’s. Additionally, V’s domestic music chart performance has raised eyebrows.

As of March 18th, V’s new song has completely dropped off all Korean music charts, including MelOn, Bugs, Flo, and Genie. Once again, V has faced setbacks on domestic charts, leaving netizens puzzled given his massive fanbase.

This isn’t the first time V has encountered difficulties on Korean music charts. During the promotion of his solo debut album “Layover,” V’s achievements were also underwhelming. Many attribute this to V’s English-language songs and jazz-influenced music, which may not cater to Korean tastes.

However, “FRI(END)S” is a Pop RnB song, a genre favored by Koreans, with an ear-pleasing, gentle melody, yet it still “flops.” Speculations arise that the issue might lie in his vocals.

In all fairness, V’s approach to his solo songs doesn’t resonate with everyone. A distinctive feature when V sings in English is his style of sliding through words and notes, creating a dreamy, ethereal vibe. His vocal tone is unique, thriving well in Korean songs but not as captivating in English ones.

Despite not resonating well with Korean listeners, “FRI(END)S” is performing well internationally. V’s international achievements are remarkable, topping the iTunes charts in 87 countries and territories. On its first day of release, the song debuted at #7 on Spotify Global, setting a record for solo K-pop artists this year.

The MV garnered 12 million views within 3 days of release. As a fan song, ARMYs are also not putting excessive pressure on achieving records.
