Which category did BTS submit their song for at the 2022 Grammys and who are the strong contenders the K-pop group is confronted with?
Kpop fans, especially ARMYs, probably can’t forget BTS’s historic milestone last year. In November 2020, the Recording Academy announced that BTS officially received a nomination in the ‘Best Pop Duo/Group Performance‘ category for the song ‘Dynamite‘. Not only is this BTS’s first Grammy nomination in their career, but they’re also the first K-pop artist to ever achieve this.
However, at the 63rd Grammy Awards (2021 Grammys), BTS’s hit “Dynamite” lost to another strong nominee, “Rain on Me” by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande. Although the boy group’s loss inevitably caused regret, it’s undeniable that the competition was fierce and a nomination alone is worth being proud of.
Another Grammy season has now arrived. Accordingly, artists who have completed the submission for the 2022 Grammys nominations will be subject to the standard tracking time of the awards (from September 1, 2020 to September 30, 2021). Recently, Billboard has revealed the names of some artists who have submitted applications for a number of specific categories.
As reported by Billboard, BTS has submitted a nomination for the ‘Best Pop Duo/Group Performance‘ category with the song ‘Butter‘. This is also the category that the group got a nomination last year but unfortunately could not win. The Big Hit boy group and their fans are looking forward to fulfilling their unfinished dream at the upcoming 2022 Grammys. However, it is definitely gonna be difficult because the competition is not getting any less intense this year.
Below is the list of artists who have applied for the Grammy 2022 ‘Best Pop Duo/Group Performance’ category according to Billboard:
Mood – 24kGoldn & Iann Dior
Kiss Me More – Doja Cat & SZA
Without You – The Kid LAROI & Miley Cyrus
Butter – BTS
Rumors – Lizzo & Cardi B
It can be seen that in this list, the two most prominent names are currently ‘Mood’ by 24kGoldn & Iann Dior and ‘Kiss Me More‘ by Doja Cat & SZA. BTS‘s song ‘Butter‘ has a remarkable achievement when it is the song that reaches the most No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2021. However, we all know that with the Grammys, achievements on Billboard is not everything and the Recording Academy has their own criteria that we can’t predict.
BTS‘s chance of winning is not too high although we still have the right to hope. However, in the immediate future, the most important goal is still BTS to be nominated for this category. Thereby BTS will become the first and only Korean artist (maybe even an Asian artist) to receive a Grammy nomination for 2 years in a row.
It is known that the Recording Academy has now started voting for the suitable artists to be nominated for the Grammy, and this selection process will take place from October 22 to November 5. The Grammys will then announce the official list of nominees for the 64th Annual Awards on November 23.
