Conservative-leaning YouTuber and former Korean history instructor Jeon Han Gil claimed that his scenes were completely edited out of the Netflix series “When Life Gives You Tangerines” due to his political views, while also mentioning singer and actress IU, who starred in the drama.
Recently, during a livestream on his YouTube channel, Jeon Han Gil discussed the issue while speaking with actor Choi Joon Yong. During the broadcast, he revealed that all of his special appearance scenes had been removed from the final release of the drama.
He claimed, “The director’s side called me and said, ‘We prepared this drama for years, but because of your political stance, there could be misunderstandings.’” He then added, “IU can appear in dramas even though she’s left-wing, but Jeon Han Gil can’t because he’s right-wing?”

Jeon Han Gil continued, “I didn’t know about it while filming, but after the martial law controversy happened, IU reportedly bought coffee for people supporting the impeachment.”
The remarks appeared to reference the time when IU prepaid drinks and bread for fans attending rallies calling for the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol. At the time, some far-right online communities criticized the singer by using the nickname “Jwa-IU,” a combination of the Korean word for “left-wing” and her name.
Regarding the controversy, IU previously addressed the issue during an interview last year. She said, “It’s not wrong to say I felt upset, but in a way, it’s also a form of interest toward me, so I think I have to endure some of it.” However, she also stated, “If expressions cross the line or create major misunderstandings, then I believe restrictions are necessary.”

During the livestream, Jeon Han Gil continued making critical remarks toward IU. He also claimed that “things suddenly became quiet after people said they would report her to the CIA.”
Previously, Jeon Han Gil had personally revealed through an online community related to Korean history exam preparation in 2023 that he made a special appearance in “When Life Gives You Tangerines.” However, when the series was officially released, all of his scenes had reportedly been edited out completely.
