Biography

Seo In-guk is a South Korean singer-songwriter and actor. He first rose to fame after winning the inaugural season of the talent audition program Superstar K in 2009 and subsequently debuted as a singer. He later transitioned into acting, achieving major recognition with the hit drama Reply 1997 (2012). Since then, he has established a successful dual career in both music and television.

Early Life and Education

Seo In-guk was born on October 23, 1987, in Ulsan, South Korea. He grew up in modest circumstances, with his parents working physically demanding jobs to support the family. From a young age, he dreamed of becoming a singer and often performed at school events and family gatherings.

Seo studied Applied Music at Daebul University, where he developed his vocal technique and musical skills. Before achieving success, he auditioned for many agencies but faced repeated rejections, often being told to lose weight. Despite setbacks, he continued pursuing music and eventually found success through televised auditions.

Career

Breakthrough with Superstar K (2009–2011)

Seo In-guk gained national attention in 2009 after winning the first season of Superstar K, one of South Korea’s largest audition programs. His victory launched his music career and earned him a recording contract.

He officially debuted as a singer in October 2009 with his first extended play Calling (Bureunda). Over time, he released multiple EPs and singles, establishing himself as a ballad and R&B vocalist.

Acting Career and Rising Popularity (2012–2016)

Seo In-guk made his official acting debut in 2012 with a supporting role in the romantic drama Love Rain, where he portrayed Kim Chang-mo. Although his role was relatively small, it marked his transition from singer to actor and introduced him to television audiences.

Later that year, he achieved his major breakthrough with the tvN youth drama Reply 1997, in which he played Yoon Yoon-jae, a quiet but deeply devoted high school student secretly in love with his childhood friend. The drama became a cultural hit and was one of cable television’s early breakout successes. Seo’s performance received widespread praise for its emotional sincerity and natural delivery, establishing him as a promising young actor. The role earned him the Best New Actor award at the 2012 KBS Drama Awards, as well as the Best Couple Award alongside co-star Jung Eun-ji.

Following the success of Reply 1997, Seo continued expanding his acting career. In 2013, he appeared in the popular fantasy romance drama The Master’s Sun, portraying Kang Woo, a loyal and warm-hearted security guard. The drama achieved strong ratings and further increased his public recognition.

In 2014, Seo took on his first major leading role in the tvN romantic comedy High School King of Savvy, where he played Lee Min-seok, a high school student who impersonates his older brother and begins working at a corporation. The role showcased his ability to balance comedy and emotional storytelling.

Seo continued to develop his acting range in 2015 with the KBS2 thriller drama Hello Monster (I Remember You), in which he portrayed Lee Hyun, a brilliant criminal profiler searching for his long-lost brother. His intense performance demonstrated a darker and more mature acting style and earned critical recognition.

In 2016, Seo appeared in two major dramas. He starred in the OCN crime series 38 Task Force, playing Yang Jung-do, a charismatic con artist working alongside a tax collection team to capture wealthy tax evaders. The drama was one of OCN’s highest-rated series at the time and strengthened his reputation as a capable lead actor.

Later that year, he headlined the MBC romantic comedy Shopping King Louie, portraying Louie, a sheltered chaebol heir who loses his memory and learns to live independently with the help of a kind young woman. The series became widely loved for its heartwarming tone, and Seo received praise for his charming and expressive performance, further solidifying his popularity with mainstream audiences.

Established Actor and Continued Work (2017–Present)

Following a series of successful dramas, Seo In-guk continued to build his career as a leading actor while expanding into diverse genres.

In 2017, Seo was cast in the fantasy historical film The King’s Case Note, playing Yoon Yi-seo, a loyal royal scribe assisting a brilliant king in solving mysteries. The film marked one of his notable appearances in historical genre projects.

That same year, Seo began his mandatory military service in March 2017, but he was discharged shortly afterward due to a diagnosed osteochondral lesion in his ankle. After multiple medical examinations, he was officially granted exemption from further service on medical grounds. He resumed his entertainment activities afterward.

Seo returned to television in 2018 with the melodrama The Smile Has Left Your Eyes, portraying Kim Moo-young, a mysterious and emotionally complex man with a troubled past. His nuanced performance received critical praise for its psychological depth and marked a significant step forward in his acting career.

After a brief hiatus, Seo returned in 2021 with the fantasy romance drama Doom at Your Service, where he played Myul Mang, a supernatural being representing destruction who becomes involved with a terminally ill woman. The drama attracted strong international viewership and reinforced his popularity with global audiences.

In 2022, Seo starred in the KBS2 mystery-comedy series Café Minamdang, portraying Nam Han-joon, a former criminal profiler who disguises himself as a shaman while secretly solving cases. The role highlighted his ability to combine humor with investigative drama.

In 2023–2024, Seo appeared in the fantasy anthology series Death’s Game, portraying Choi Yi-jae, a man forced to experience multiple reincarnations after attempting suicide. The series allowed Seo to portray a wide range of emotional states and personalities, earning praise for his layered performance and further demonstrating his versatility as an actor.

Through these projects, Seo In-guk has established himself as a reliable leading actor capable of handling romance, thriller, fantasy, and comedy genres, maintaining a steady presence in Korean television while continuing his music activities.

Military Service

In 2017, Seo In-guk entered mandatory military service but was discharged after a few days due to a medical condition involving his ankle. Following additional examinations, he received a medical exemption from military duty.
