As recent reports of kidnapping and confinement crimes targeting Korean nationals in Cambodia draw attention, the mysterious death of BJ Ayoung, a South Korean internet personality who died under suspicious circumstances in 2023 has resurfaced in the public eye.
Despite two years having passed, the truth behind her death remains unresolved.
The late BJ Ayoung (real name Byun Ayoung) was discovered on June 6, 2023, in a rural area of Kandal Province, near Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Her body was reportedly wrapped in a red cloth and abandoned in a pit.
Cambodian police arrested a Chinese couple who operated a local medical clinic, charging them with abandoning a corpse. The suspects claimed that Ayoung died after suffering convulsions during medical treatment. Panicking after her death, they allegedly decided to dispose of her body.

However, doubts soon emerged. Witnesses noted that Ayoung’s body appeared swollen and bore possible signs of assault, fueling suspicions that her death may not have been accidental. Authorities began investigating whether the clinic was operating without a medical license and if malpractice or negligence had occurred.
The case gained renewed attention after being featured on SBS’s investigative program Unanswered Questions. A Cambodian official interviewed on the show stated,
“The cause of death appears to be suffocation. There were no visible signs of torture or major external injuries. The drug test came back negative. However, the victim was not wearing her upper underwear and her lower underwear was on backwards, which raised suspicions of possible sexual assault.”
One of the arrested suspects, the male clinic owner, provided a controversial statement to police:

“She asked for an injection, but I refused. She already had multiple injection marks on her body. When I didn’t give her one, she fell asleep. Later, I found her foaming at the mouth and unresponsive. We gave her medication and oxygen, but she didn’t survive.”
Prior to traveling to Cambodia, BJ Ayoung had announced her retirement from streaming, telling her fans she planned to live quietly as a regular person.
“I’m leaving my BJ life behind. From now on, I’ll live as an ordinary person Ayoung. I’ll work hard and start fresh,” she said at the time.
Her sudden death, coupled with the strange details surrounding the discovery of her body, has left fans and investigators searching for answers that have yet to be found.
As of 2025, the case remains unsolved, with both Korean and Cambodian authorities silent on any new developments.
