One Piece, Oda’s legendary manga, has spanned decades without reaching its conclusion. Fans hardly mind, as its thrilling battles, humor, and relatable characters continue to captivate readers worldwide. Still, one of the most persistent questions has been whether Luffy and Nami might one day become an official couple.

Luffy and Nami – a beloved pairing in One Piece

Known as “LuNami” or “LuNa,” Luffy and Nami are one of the most popular pairings in One Piece. Their relationship is built on countless moments of loyalty, trust, and care, particularly in dire situations. Both characters show deep concern for one another, making it easy for fans to view them as the most trustworthy duo in the series.

The idea of a romance was further fueled when an official spin-off anime, One Piece in Love, depicted two students named Luffy and Nami with clear romantic feelings. For many fans, this seemed like a nod to a possible love story between the Straw Hat captain and his navigator.

Eiichiro Oda: “One Piece is not a romance manga”

Despite fan hopes, Oda has consistently made it clear that One Piece is not about romance. The series focuses instead on friendship, brotherhood, and dreams. This applies not only to Luffy and Nami, but to all Straw Hat members.

In an interview with Shounen Jump, Oda was asked about Nami’s feelings. His answer was straightforward: “Nami probably sees the good qualities in all the male characters, including Luffy. But in the end, One Piece is not a romance manga.” He emphasized that there will be no romantic relationships between Straw Hat members, reaffirming his long-standing “no romance” rule.

This is not the first time Oda has shut down such expectations. He even dismissed the idea of adding romance to Netflix’s live-action One Piece, stressing that the focus must remain on the Straw Hats’ journey and dreams.

Nami’s true feelings toward Luffy

While Oda acknowledged that Nami recognizes Luffy’s admirable qualities, her feelings toward him — and toward the other male crewmates — are purely platonic, rooted in sibling-like camaraderie.

That said, Oda has left himself room to surprise fans. If he ever decides to add an emotional twist near the end of the story, a romance could still emerge. Whether or not Nami and Luffy ever become a couple, their bond remains one of the strongest and most genuine relationships in One Piece.
