In One Piece, Monkey D. Luffy’s Gear 5 has been hailed as one of the most powerful transformations in the series, turning him into the so-called “Warrior of Liberation.” With limitless abilities powered by imagination, Gear 5 appears nearly invincible.
But as the Final Saga unfolds, fans believe that Gear 5 may not be the strongest ability in the world of One Piece. Instead, attention has turned to one of Luffy’s greatest rivals: Marshall D. Teach, a.k.a. Blackbeard.
The Power of Devil Fruit Awakenings
The concept of Devil Fruit awakenings has become a central element in the Final Saga. Awakening allows users to push their Devil Fruit abilities beyond natural limits, unlocking devastating new powers. Characters such as Rob Lucci and the Gorosei have already showcased the terrifying potential of awakenings.

Luffy’s Gear 5 is itself the result of his Devil Fruit awakening. However, speculation suggests that Blackbeard’s Devil Fruit—specifically the Yami Yami no Mi (Dark-Dark Fruit)—could reach even more dangerous levels when awakened.
Why Blackbeard’s Awakening May Surpass Gear 5
Blackbeard already possesses two of the most powerful Devil Fruits:
- Gura Gura no Mi, the Tremor-Tremor Fruit, capable of producing world-shattering earthquakes.
- Yami Yami no Mi, the Dark-Dark Fruit, which allows him to nullify the powers of other Devil Fruit users.
Currently, Blackbeard must make physical contact to cancel an opponent’s powers. But if his Yami Yami no Mi were to awaken, it could evolve to the point where he could project his darkness across a battlefield, nullifying Devil Fruits without touching his targets.
This would effectively render Luffy’s Gear 5—and many other Devil Fruit powers—useless in direct combat.
Luffy vs. Blackbeard: A Final Showdown?
Given Blackbeard’s portrayal as one of the most dangerous pirates and a likely final antagonist, many fans believe Luffy will eventually face him in an epic battle. However, with the potential awakening of the Yami Yami no Mi, Blackbeard could emerge as an even greater threat than Kaido or Big Mom, setting up a truly climactic clash.
If true, Oda may be preparing for Luffy’s toughest fight yet, where imagination and resilience will be tested against darkness that can swallow even Gear 5.
