The Summer 2025 anime season has officially crowned its champion in Japan, and the result may surprise international fans. Instead of expected frontrunners like Dandadan season 2 or My Dress-Up Darling season 2, the top spot went to the remake of a 1990s classic: Hell Teacher: Jigoku Sensei Nube.
Hell Teacher Nube Takes No. 1
According to a poll conducted by Dengeki Online in mid-August, Hell Teacher Nube ranked first among all currently airing anime. The supernatural action series beat out heavy competition from romance hit My Dress-Up Darling and fantasy newcomer The Secrets of the Silent Witch.
This outcome surprised many overseas viewers since Hell Teacher Nube is not widely known outside Japan. However, domestic audiences embraced it as a nostalgic revival of a beloved Shonen Jump manga and Toei Animation’s original 1990s adaptation.

Why Did Nube Win?
Unlike other trending series, the remake of Hell Teacher Nube is distributed exclusively via the YouTube channel “It’s Anime” by REMOW, limiting global exposure. Despite this, Japanese audiences praised the reboot for successfully modernizing the story while preserving the core mix of supernatural folklore, action, and moral lessons that made the original manga iconic.

Interestingly, the remake toned down fan service compared to its predecessors, adopting a lighter, more story-focused tone. This change seems to have resonated with Japanese fans, particularly those who grew up with the 1990s series.
The success of Hell Teacher Nube highlights a growing trend: Japanese viewers still hold deep affection for classic series when faithfully reimagined for modern times. While globally hyped titles like Dandadan and Kaiju No. 8 attracted attention abroad, Japan crowned a nostalgic “legend” as its anime of the season.
As the Fall 2025 anime season approaches expected to be one of the biggest ever—fans are eager to see whether new titles or more legendary revivals will dominate the rankings.
