TWS

TWS is short for “TWENTY FOUR SEVEN WITH US”, which means “always with TWS”. Following SEVENTEEN, Pledis once again impressed netizens with its unique naming strategy using numbers. Accordingly, TWS will spread bright energy as well as cheerful and refreshing music that makes people want to be with them at every moment, just like their group’s name.

Meanwhile, on April 2, the official fandom name of TWS was revealed to be “42 (SAI)”. According to Pledis, “42 (SAI)” refers to fans who are with TWS 24/7 and have the most special relationship with the group.

TWS’ Career

Pledis announced their plans to launch a new boy group in November 2023, and the members were introduced with their faces covered during the “Caratland” event of Pledis boy group SEVENTEEN in 2023.

TWS was later announced as the name of the group, and on January 2, they released the pre-debut track “Oh Mymy : 7s” in a Prologue video that featured SEVENTEEN members. Eventually, TWS made their offical debut on January 22, 2024 with the EP “Sparkling Blue” and the title song “Plot Twist”, which consistently ranked high on Korean music charts. In fact, with this track, TWS managed to won their 1st music show cup on “Show Champion” just 23 days after their debut.

The group has since consistently unveiled new music and made multiple comebacks, with their latest release being the single album “Last Bell” with the title “Last Festival” on November 25, 2024.

TWS remains relatively popular among 5th generation K-pop idols, and was even selected as the models for Lotte Chilsung Beverage’s Milkis before their official debut. They have also become brand ambassadors for the French luxury fashion house Celine in November 2024.

TWS’ Controversies

Chart Manipulation

As TWS’s 1st title “Plot Twist” and 2nd mini-album “Summer Beat” did well on Korean charts despite being relatively less popular overseas, there were suspicions of chart manipulation. However, Pledis Entertainment later refuted such claims and announced legal actions to protect their artist.

Plagiarism

When the logo for TWS was announced, TWM Strap, a custom watch strap brand, accused the boy group of stealing their design, leading to a plagiarism controversy. However, TWM Strap later met with Pledis staff and the external designer behind TWS’ logo, and confirmed that it was not plagiarism.

Cultural Appropriation

On February 5, 2025, TWS’s Hanjin came under fire for referring to Korea’s iconic side dish “kimchi” as the Chinese dish “paocai”. This action of the male idol sparked intense criticisms from the public and even a professor, and Hanjin ended up deleting the most.
