2025 proved to be a turbulent year for the Korean entertainment industry, with several beloved stars facing unexpected controversies that shook public trust. From underage dating allegations surrounding Kim Soo-hyun to workplace abuse claims against comedian Park Na-rae, long-held positive images crumbled amid a series of high-profile incidents.
The year’s first major shock came on February 16, when 24-year-old actress Kim Sae-ron tragically passed away. Controversy intensified as her death coincided with Kim Soo-hyun’s birthday, prompting renewed scrutiny of past rumors about his relationships during his youth. The allegations affected his career, delaying the release of Knock Off and sparking potential legal disputes with advertisers.

Amid the scandals, there were celebratory moments in the industry. Actors Kim Woo-bin and Shin Min-ah married on December 20 after a 10-year relationship, while other celebrities such as Yoon Sun-woo, Kim Ga-eun, and 2nd-generation girl group stars like Bang Min-ah and Ham Eun-jung also announced marriages, creating a wave of “wedding news” across K-entertainment. Stars like Tiffany and Byun Yo-han also revealed long-term relationships with plans to marry, adding a lighter side to the year.
2025 also saw unexpected career twists. In the drama Bon Appétit, Your Majesty, Lee Chae-min, born in 2000, rose to prominence after Park Sung-hoon left the project amid adult content allegations. Lee Chae-min’s fresh image and strong performance earned him over 30 new script offers, illustrating how controversies can unexpectedly highlight emerging talent.

Conversely, actors with past school bullying controversies experienced varied outcomes. Go Min-si withdrew from public activity after allegations resurfaced, affecting her roles in upcoming dramas. Meanwhile, Kim Hee-ra and Shim Eun-woo, who faced similar past controversies, successfully returned to acting following settlements and clarifications, showing how response timing and handling can shape career recovery.

Comedian and actor Lee Yi-kyung also faced image decline due to personal rumors, leading to withdrawals from major variety shows like Hangout With Yoo and The Return of Superman, despite ongoing roles in I am Solo and Brave Detectives.

The year’s latter half brought heavier scrutiny on well-established stars. Park Na-rae faced workplace abuse allegations, and Jo Se-ho was linked to organized crime rumors, prompting him to step back from television appearances. Veteran actor Cho Jin-woong, previously celebrated for his patriotic and professional image, faced public backlash after past juvenile offenses were revealed, leading to his sudden retirement despite upcoming projects like Signal Season 2.

Even long-trusted K-pop idols were not immune. SHINee’s Key faced public criticism over allegedly illegal cosmetic procedures, despite maintaining a spotless career since his 2008 debut. His defense that he was unaware of the illegality, despite his mother’s decades-long nursing experience, drew significant public backlash.

An entertainment industry insider noted, “While the first half of the year was relatively quiet after the Kim Soo-hyun controversy, the atmosphere dramatically intensified in the latter months. Even veteran stars with longstanding positive images faced scrutiny, and public perception turned noticeably colder.”
Overall, 2025 demonstrated just how quickly public trust and celebrity “image assets” can collapse, marking the year as a cautionary tale in the Korean entertainment industry.
