Winners, Controversies, Condolences For Lee Sun-kyun: Everything About 2023 SBS Drama Awards
On the afternoon of December 29th, “2023 SBS Drama Awards” were held with Shin Dong-yeop and Kim Yoo-jung as MCs.
The grand prize (Daesang) was jointly won by “Revenant” Kim Tae-ri and “Taxi Driver 2” Lee Je-hoon. Lee Je-hoon had no relationship with the late Lee Sun-kyun, but he expressed his condolences during the acceptance speech. “Today is also a very painful day. Personally, I only met him a few random times and we didn’t act in any production together before, but I dreamed of becoming an actor after looking at the path that he walked. I think I wanted to become like him and tried to follow him as a role model. I want to give this award to him. He has sincerely worked hard, and I hope he is comfortable and happy in the sky,” he said.
Top Excellence Award (Specialized Genre or Action Miniseries) went to Park Sung-woong (“The Killing Vote”) and Moon Chae-won (“Payback”). Lee Sun-kyun’s co-star in the drama “Payback” Moon Chae-won was absent from the ceremony due to the sad news of his passing. Looking sad, Park Sung-woong said during his acceptance speech, “I want to just write a letter rather than an acceptance speech. I hope you can rest comfortably in a peaceful world where there is no more pain or concern.”
Winners of the Best Couple Award were Song Kang and Kim Yoo-jung. As Song was absent from the ceremony, Kim Yoo-jung received the trophy alone. Previously, the Best Couple Award was controversial due to SBS’s sudden change of the screening criteria. In the previous vote held from the 18th to the 27th, Song Kang-Kim Yoo-jung couple overwhelmingly topped the list, but SBS made a notice in the last minute that the winners would be selected based on internal vote in addition to the results of the vote.
All 7 nominees won the Best Newcomer Award. Each of the winners expressed their gratitude to the staff, fellow actors, and family members. However, both the viewers and the rookie actors seemed uncomfortable with the results, as this once-in-a-lifetime award seemed to have lost its credibility after being given so carelessly.
Coincidentally, the 2023 SBS Drama Awards was held on the day the late Lee Sun-kyun was buried. Participants wore black or white dress codes, and the winners expressed their condolences to the deceased.
In particular, at the end of the show, a message was shown to mourn the late Lee Sun-kyun. The text, which was released along with the photo of the deceased, said, “Lee Sun-kyun left our side. We pray for his rest in peace.“
