Will Ryu Jun-yeol’s Ambassadorship be Canceled? Greenpeace Issues Official Statement

Environmental organization Greenpeace stated that they will review and discuss regulations as Ryu Jun-yeol faces greenwashing allegations.

On March 21, international environmental organization Greenpeace issued a statement amid allegations of greenwashing addressed at its ambassador, Ryu Jun-yeol.

Previously, netizens questioned Ryu Jun-yeol’s qualifications as an environmental ambassador and accused him of “greenwashing”, following the actor’s “love drama” with Han So-hee and Hyeri.

Some people even canceled their donations to the organization, and intensifying negative opinions seems to have prompted Greenpeace to finally release an official statement.

Below is Greenpeace’s full statement, as reported by media site Sports Chosun:

“Ryu Jun-yeol, as a promotional ambassador, has been actively participating in various campaigns of Greenpeace since 2016 and is also a sponsor of Greenpeace. In April 2023, based on his willingness to participate in various environmental campaigns, we appointed actor Ryu as the first promotional ambassador for Greenpeace East Asia.

His activities as a promotional ambassador are voluntary activities based on personal goodwill.

We are currently verifying inquiries from sponsors regarding this incident. Greenpeace is an organization that operates solely on individual and independent foundation sponsorship without receiving sponsorship from the government or corporations. One of Greenpeace’s roles is to deliver a stronger and louder voice of citizens to lead changes in government and corporate behavior. We will take this opportunity to review and discuss regulations regarding promotional ambassadors.

Thank you.”

It seems that while Ryu Jun-yeol is not losing his ambassadorship as of the moment, Greenpeace have been considering the negative reactions towards the actor.
