Why SEVENTEEN’s 1st Daesang at GDA after 9 Years is Significant

On January 6, SEVENTEEN received the Daesang “Album of the Year” at the 38th Golden Disc Awards (hereinafter referred to as “2024 GDA”), which was held at Jakarta International Stadium in Indonesia.

SEVENTEEN’s journey to their 1st Daesang at GDA dates back to 2016, when they won Best New Artist at this award ceremony. Then, from 2017 to 2023, they consistently won Album Bonsang (Physical Bonsang) awards, before elevating to the Daesang in their 9th year of activities.

As a result, SEVENTEEN can be considered the epitome of K-pop idols who went from “zero to hero”, having shown consistent appeal throughout the year. Moreover, the group’s 10th mini-album “FML”, which earned them the Daesang, set a new record in the Korean music industry with physical sales exceeding 6 million copies.

The 2024 GDA’s criteria for “Album of the Year” is calculated based on 60% of physical sales scores and 40% of judge scores. SEVENTEEN, who earned the highest physical sales score among all artists, also triumphed in the category by winning over 17 out of 30 judges, scoring 91.36 out of 100 points in total.

Second place went to Stray Kids, known for their unstoppable rapid growth, with sales exceeding 5 million copies. It is reported that among 30 GDA judges for the “Album of the Year” category,  5 judges chose Stray Kids, followed by NCT DREAM, Jungkook, and TOMORROW X TOGETHER (TXT).

The past year also highlighted the advancement of girl groups in the album category. While boy groups had been dominant in the album category for ages, the atmosphere was different this time. In particular, IVE, aespa, and LE SSEFAFIM were among the 10 winners of the Album bonsang, which is awarded based on physical sales.

The selection process for the Golden Disc Awards album category was fair and impartial. It combined the evaluations (40%) of expert judges, including Golden Disc executive committee members, music journalists, music program producers, pop music critics, and domestic distribution-related individuals, with the circle chart album sales calculation (60%) to determine the rankings.
