Why is Girls’ Generation the only Kpop group to ever win at YouTube Music Awards?

The winner of “Video Of The Year” at YouTube Music Awards has not been changed for 8 years, why is that?

YouTube is currently the world’s largest and most well-known online video sharing platform. Youtube is also a place for artists to bring their music closer to the public. With a huge number of worldwide users, YouTube has thousands of videos with millions of views every hour. Views and like counts on Youtube are also considered a measurement of the artists’ popularity. To honor the content creators, Youtube also holds awards and presents gifts as recognition for the artists and content producers.

Girls' Generation

8 years ago, on November 3, 2013, the first and only K-pop group was honored with the “Video Of The Year” award at the first-ever YouTube Music Awards. The winner was Girls’ Generation – the legendary girl group of Kpop’s 2nd generation, with their hit song “I Got A Boy” released in 2013. Back in 2013, YouTube was not as popular as it is today, but “I Got A Boy” already crossed 10 million views within only 55 hours.

At the YouTube Music Video Awards that took place in New York, Girls’ Generation beat Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, One Direction and many other famous artists to bring home the “Video of the Year” award. Tiffany’s iconic quote “YouTube is my best friend” also originated from this event.

However, what’s interesting is that this award has only been held by YouTube once so far, so Girls’ Generation is of course the first and only Kpop artist to have won “Video of the Year”, an achievement that current top Kpop groups like BTS, BLACKPINK, or Western stars cannot have.
