“Unanswered Questions” unveils the truth behind the falling death of Busan’s K high school student Jung Da Geum

“Unanswered Questions” tracks the mysterious death of a high school girl in Busan.

SBS’s “Unanswered Questions” broadcast on February 25th will look into mysterious details surrounding the fall of Jung Da Gum with the special episode titled “Truth hidden in Room 1216 – Jung Da Geum’s death”.

In the early morning of December 18th, 2009, a female student was reported to have fallen from a tall building at a resort in Hwasun, Jeollanam-do. That student was Jung Da Geum, a second-year student at K girls’ high school in Busan who came to the resort the previous day for an experiential study. Jung Da Geum reportedly fell from the 12th floor, causing fractures and organ damage all over her body. She died while being transferred to a nearby hospital.

Jung Da Geum grew a wealthy and harmonious family. She had excellent talents and great enthusiasm enough to win prizes at various art competitions. A few hours before her death, she was still smiling brightly and taking pictures with her friends.

However, the testimonies of the four friends who stayed with Jung Da Geum in Room 1216 were different from each other. It was known that Jung Da Geum suffered stress related to her studying and allowances, and for that reason, she once attempted to make an extreme choice on the roof of her apartment.

Choi Dae Jung (assumed name), one of the four friends, said, “There was only me and Jung Da Geum in Room 1216 just before she fell”, adding “Da Geum suddenly went out to the veranda alone and jumped down”. There were no other witnesses at the time Jung Da Geum fell from the 12th floor, so the police concluded that Jung Da Geum made an extreme choice.

However, Jung Da Geum’s parents found out that there was a mysterious bruise on their daughter’s left eyelid. In addition, Jung Da Geum’s autopsy revealed a high blood alcohol level enough for a license suspension and numerous wounds in her mouth.

In an interview with the production team of “Unanswered Questions”, classmates in Room 1217 testified that they heard a quarrel in Jung Da Geum’s room – Room 1216. According to testimonies, four people in Room 1216, including Lim Ga Young (assumed name), forced Jung Da Geum to drink then Im Ga Young angrily dragged Jung Da Geum to the other room, grabbed her hair, and pushed her to the bathroom sink. In addition, the autopsy examiner discovered that the wounds in Jung Da Geum’s mouth were caused by other external forces that are unrelated to the fall.

However, students in Room 1216 insisted, “It is true that Lim Ga Young grabbed Da Geum’s hair, but she poured water on Da Geum just to wake her up”, adding “After returning to our room, there was no assault until Da Geum fell from the veranda”.

In the end, the prosecution indicted Lim Ga Young on charges of causing injuries and ordered her to do community service under the law of juvenile protection. The other three students were acquitted of charges. Teachers at K high school only received warnings from the Office of Education.

While investigating this case, the production team of “Unanswered Questions” received a report from a man living downstairs at the same resort as Jung Da Geum on the day of the incident. He said he heard 4-5 women laughing while playing on the veranda. 10 minutes later, he heard shocking screams from 2 people.

Based on the details and reports, “Unanswered Questions” will reorganize the incident of Jung Da Geum’s death in the broadcast on February 25th.
