Uhm Jung Hwa shines in “Doctor Cha” but the plot falters

“Doctor Cha” has had an impressive run with high ratings but not without noticeable flaws.

Doctor Cha” tells the story of Cha Jung Sook (Uhm Jung Hwa), who sacrifices her career to take care of her family. Following a life-changing illness, Jung Sook remembers the heyday of her youth. This pushes her to pick up where she has left off and follow her dream once again.

Cha Jung Sook’s journey to become a medical student connects with the audience on many levels. As a result, the series garnered an 18.4% viewership rating on the 12th episode, achieving an all-time high.

For a large part, it is thanks to the cast’s acting. As the star of the show, Uhm Jung Hwa delivered her best performance, most notably with her inner dialogue. She touched the audience by fleshing out some of the deepest feelings on-screen.

On the other hand, Kim Byung Chul gained applause for his hateful character. Having a knack for comedy, the actor draws laughter with hilarious expressions. However, when the story grows more serious, he becomes a despicable character for all the dirty tricks he will pull to hide the affair.

Nonetheless, that does not mean there aren’t any flaws in the series. After 14 episodes, a question remains, why is Jung Sook so persistent with staying at the university hospital where her husband, Seo In Ho (Kim Byung Chul), and his mistress Seung Hee (Myung Se Bin) work?

Moreover, as a medical drama, some audience members feel that, at some point, the drama was exploiting Jung Sook’s sad backstory to fish for remorse. Roy Kim, a potential romantic partner of Jung Sook, annoys viewers from time to time when he shows little respect for her boundaries, which did more harm than good.

Furthermore, the viewers also notice a lack of chemistry between him and Jung Sook. Some opinions believe it’s also unrealistic to have a young, charismatic, and handsome guy to target a married woman publicly, whether or not he knows about her husband’s affair.

Moreover, the audience agrees that it is not convincing enough to have Jung Sook’s children and mother-in-law cover up In Ho’s affair simply because they were afraid she might get sick.

As “Doctor Cha” is reaching its final week, let’s wait and see how the ending will turn out on Saturday and Sunday on Netflix.
