Tang Wei recalls touching memory with her mother, “It felt like sending my daughter to school”
Chinese actress Tang Wei has recalled one of her happiest memories with her mother in a recent interview.
Fashion magazine W Korea recently published an interview with actress Tang Wei. In the interview, Tang Wei was asked if there was a moment when she felt perfectly happy in her daily life, and she mentioned a story with her mother.
In particular, Tang Wei shared, “My mother recently started attending school”, adding, “Before the semester began, my husband (director Kim Tae Yong) and I paid her tuition and checked her dormitory, and then we said goodbye to her. My mother said ‘Alright, I’m fine,’ and saw us off cheerfully.”
She went on to say, “We left and went to my former teacher’s house to eat persimmons, which were very delicious. Suddenly, I thought of my mother. I thought she would enjoy the ripe ones right away and slowly savor the unripe ones. So the next day, I drove back to visit her.”
Tang Wei added, “My mother was happy to see us but seemed anxious and flustered, as it was her first day of classes and she didn’t want to be late. She looked different, like a young girl. Watching her take the food and run into the school building, I thought I would never forget this moment. Usually, I was the one leaving and my mother stayed behind to see me off, but that day our roles were reversed.”
She continued, “I said, ‘Mom, bye!’ But she didn’t even look back. I wanted to take a picture, but she disappeared before I had the chance. I couldn’t believe it. She didn’t even look back. The drive home that day felt incredibly happy. It felt like sending my daughter to school for the first time. It was a feeling beyond happiness.”
The story of Tang Wei and her mother quickly spread through major Korean online communities such as DC Inside and Instiz. Netizens who saw the story also left comments such as, “How can her daily life be so movie-like?”, “Capturing and expressing such moments… that’s why Tang Wei is a great actress”, “Just hearing about it makes me happy too”, and “It’s really touching.”
Meanwhile, Tang Wei attended the 59th Baeksang Arts Awards last month and won the Best Actress Award (in Film) for her role in “Decision to Leave”. In her acceptance speech, the actress thanked all the Korean filmmakers and audiences, as well as “Decision to Leave” director Park Chan Wook, the screenwriter, cinematographer, and Park Hae Il, among others who participated in the movie.
On the other hand, Tang Wei married director Kim Tae Yong, who is ten years her senior, in 2014, after working together on the film “Late Autumn”. The couple welcomed their daughter, Summer, two years after their marriage.
