Super Junior’s Kim Hee-chul “Idol Is Just A Job, Not My Life”

Super Junior’s Kim Hee-chul emphasized that being an idol is just a job

On Oct 12th, Super Junior members Kim Hee-chul and Yesung appeared as guests on the YouTube channel “Jo Hyun-ah’s Thursday Night”.

In the video, Kim Hee-chul shared his concerns about idol activities.

He revealed his concerns about appearance, “In my 20s, I wanted to kiss myself. I felt so happy and lovely in whatever stage I was on. But as I got older, I feel shy and embarrassed.” He added, “Looking at our members, I feel this… Our members are really cool. These guys are 40. Leeteuk is 42 years old. But it’s not easy to manage oneself like that.

He mentioned, “I talked about this with members. The conflicting aspect between me and Yesung is… For Yesung, it’s ‘Hyung, we’re in our 40s but since we debuted as idols, let’s maintain ourselves as idols even when we’re in our 50s or 60s’. For me, with that mindset, I’ll just not become an idol anymore. Because idol is just a job for me, not my life.”

Hearing this, Jo Hyun-ah said, “When I was young, there was a period I thought I’m not pretty. I needed time to accept that. After that, I feel pretty and I like myself so much. But for you, you were born pretty. Then you have to accept yourself who’s getting older.”

However, Kim Hee-chul confessed, “But this isn’t easy. Because Hee-chul fans liked had the appearance of 20s. I can’t maintain this. I could quit drinking or eating carbohydrate but that’s the case for Yesung. For me, I don’t have the confidence for that. It’s like I’m losing happiness.”

Yesung and Kim Hee-chul also mentioned episodes from their trainee days. Kim Hee-chul said, “I’m not sure with SM nowadays but before, they used to give us ‘practice halt’ because some people can’t be controlled so to give them time to reflect. I went to Sauna with Yesung. The trainer was like ‘You guys look like you had fun. Why do you guys look so fresh?’ so I said, ‘We went to sauna!’ And she asked us to write letter of apology so we went inside a very small room and wrote the letter. I was writing down, ‘I’m sorry I’m sorry… although I’m not sure what wrong thing I did but if going to sauna is a sin…’

Yesung shared, “We have different stances. For him, even if he doesn’t behave, he thought ‘Everything will be fine’. For me, I was like “I can be cut out from the team anytime’. I only thought about getting the opportunity to debut and being successful. Speaking more honestly, I think the scars I got during that time made myself right now.”
