Song Hye Kyo laughed, Kim Nam Gil cried… Sluggish results of TVING’s “Island” and “Work Later, Drink Now 2”

Contrary to the great success of “The Glory”, TVING dramas “Island” and “Work Later, Drink Now 2”, failed to gain attention.

When Netflix laughed, TVING cried. While Song Hye Kyo achieved great success, Kim Nam Gil, who is just as outstanding, failed to attract the audience.

In particular, Song Hye Kyo’s work “The Glory” received favorable reviews both at home and abroad, raising expectations for a season 2. Meanwhile, Kim Nam Gil’s “Island”, which began airing on the same day, concluded the 1st season without much hype. In addition, TVING’s other drama “Work Later, Drink Now 2”, also ended without gaining as much popularity as Season 1.

It’s been 20 days since the release of Netflix original drama “The Glory”, which starred Song Hye Kyo, but the interest and hype surrounding the work is still hot. The series ranked first for two weeks in a row in the content rankings announced by Kinolights, an OTT integrated search and content recommendation platform. At the same time, its cumulative viewing time worldwide also easily exceeded 100 million hours, and within two weeks of release, ranked first in the global TOP10 TV show. non-English category, on Netflix.

“The Glory” is the reunion of writer Kim Eun Sook and Song Hye Kyo, 6 years after the KBS2 drama “’Descendants of the Sun”. As Song Hye Kyo won the grand prize at the 2016 KBS Drama Awards with “Descendants of the Sun”, it was only natural that the meeting between the two would draw attention. And Song Hye Kyo exceeded these expectations and showed results beyond imagination.

In the end, with the impeccable acting of cast members, the sophisticated directing, and the solid script, “The Glory” received numerous favorable reviews from domestic and foreign media alike.

As a result, expectations for Part 2 of “The Glory”, which is scheduled to be released in March, are also growing. According to Netflix, there are already a lot of inquiries about Part 2. Opinions are emerging one after another about whether the release date can be advanced.

island

Meanwhile, TVING seems to be struggling, with neither “Island” –  a 20 billion blockbuster drama, nor “Work Later, Drink Now 2” – which first season enjoyed explosive popularity, managing to achieve the expected results. Both series are successful within TVING alone, having ranked 1st and 2nd in the number of “weekly paid subscription contributors”, but have little public popularity.

In particular, “Island” was expected to show off the splendid action of leading actor Kim Nam Gil, who won two awards at the SBS Drama Awards. At the same time, there was also the powerful visual combination between Lee Da Hee and Cha Eun Woo.

However, the result fell short of expectations, and “Island” ended up being held back by its lengthy development and unfortunate CGI. As a result, Season 1 concluded on January 13th without much hype, while Season 2 will return on February 24th after a six-week break.
