Candidates for the main categories of the Seoul International Drama Awards 2022 have been revealed.

On August 2nd, the organization of Seoul International Drama Awards (director Kim Eui-chul) announced that a total of 24 works from 11 countries and 30 individual candidates were selected as a result of the preliminary examination of 225 works from 39 countries (regions) submitted to the international competition sector.

The Competition Section of the 2022 Seoul International Drama Awards consists of 3 categories, including short film, mini-series, and feature film. There are 8 candidates for each category’s Best Picture and nominees for individual awards (director, writer, actress, actor) will advance to the main awards.

8 short films, such as British film “Help” and German film “Take Me Home”, 8 mini-series, such as Canadian drama “The Last Summers of the Raspberries” and American drama “Station Eleven”, 8 feature films, such as Chinese film “The Ideal City” and Turkish film “Destan”, join the main competition.

The King’s Affection

The Best Director Award, a total of 7 directors, including Japanese-American director Hiro Murai, who used to direct music videos for the R&B Pop singer Usher, “Station Eleven” director Jeremy Podeswa, “Nobody’s Child” French director Akim Isker and South Korean director Choi Sang-yeol of KBS’s “Hee-soo”, were listed as nominees.

6 screenwriters, including Agnes Pluch, who tells the story of a shopping mall murder caused by the feeling of human insults through “Breaking Point”, and Han Hee-jung, who portrays a secret royal romance in which the Crown Prince’s sister has to hide her identity under man’s costumes after the Crown Prince’s death through “The King’s Affection” starring Park Eun-bin and Ro-woon, were announced for the competition of the Best Writer category.

The King’s Affection

In the Best Actress category, Emmy Award winner and Sandra Oh’s co-star in “Killing Eve” Jodie Comer, South Korean actress Jeon So-min with diverse acting transformations and Turkish top model-actress Ebru Şahin, were nominated.

A total of 6 prominent actors, such as Stephen Graham, who starred in “Venom”, “The Irishman” and lead actor in the upcoming movie “Boiling Point”, Sebastian Koch, who won the Best European Actor Award at the Golden Globe Awards, and Korean actor Kim Nam-gil, who successfully portrayed profiler Song Ha-young in “Through the Darkness”, joined the competition for Best Actor.

In particular, the British movie “Help” is drawing attention for being nominated in three categories (Best Short Film, Best Actress, Best Actor) and raising expectations to whether it will be able to win all three awards.

Judges commented that many high-quality and meaningful dramas were produced despite the shrinking global drama production environment after the Covid-19 pandemic. In particular, the Corona-themed dramas not only emphasized recording the days we are in but also delivered a message about “what should humans do?”.
