Top 6 K-dramas with highest premiere ratings on Korean public channels: “Big Mouth” made a grand entrance

Public channels have been having a hard time competing in the K-drama world, but these 6 K-dramas are the cream of the group

Not every K-drama that starts well, ends well, and a good premiere rating does not necessarily mean a successful K-drama. Still, a good start can draw more audiences to the show, and these 6 K-dramas have managed to achieve this.

Below are the 6 K-dramas in question, as of July 31st.

Why Her? (SBS) – 6%

With ratings peaking at 10.7%, “Why Her?” is currently the 3rd highest-rated mini series of SBS within 2022. Starring famous actress Seo Hyun Jin, “Why Her” had an excellent start with the premiere rating of 6% – which is also the series’ lowest ratings during its broadcast.

Unfortunately, “Why Her?” became explosive early on, making its second half fall short of the hype it initially received.

Through The Darkness (SBS) – 6.2%

While “Through The Darkness” surpassed “Why Her?” by 0.2% in its pilot episode, the series had a lower peak. In addition, it was also shorter than the normal miniseries, with only 12 episodes.

Still, “Through The Darkness” had a stable run, and actor Kim Nam Gil did an excellent job throughout the series. It was quite a grim and complicated drama, however, leading to its híghest rating of 8.3%.

Big Mouth (MBC) – 6.2%

One of the most anticipated MBC dramas this year, “Big Mouth” premiered to a promising rating of 6.2%. The drama marked Lee Jong Suk’s first small-screen comeback after his discharge, raising high expectations. Although the second episode saw a slight drop of 0.1%, the coming episodes are expected to record higher ratings as the drama unfolds.

“Big Mouth” has a fast and suspenseful pace, thus keeping viewers hooked to the screen. Although this is their first time acting together, the convincing chemistry between the “visual couple” Lee Jong Suk and Girls’ Generation’s Yoona as a married couple has also gained positive reviews. Hopefully, the drama will be able to maintain its hype.

Bloody Heart (KBS2) – 6.3%

Bloody Heart” is the only drama from KBS2 making it into the Top 6. The drama premiered to a rating of 6.3%, and peaked at 8.9%. Thanks to these numbers, “Bloody Heart” remains KBS2’s most popular drama so far this year. Despite not being dubbed a hit, Lee Joon’s comeback work still received many favorable reactions in terms of story, visuals, and the cast’s performances.

Tracer (MBC) – 7.4%

As the follow-up drama to the smash hit “The Red Sleeve”, “Tracer” was off to a good start with a rating of 7.4%. The main cast of “Tracer” is a major factor that draws viewers in as it consists of all trustworthy actors such as Im Si Wan, Go Ah Sung, and Son Hyun Joo. Many viewers find it regrettable that the highest rating of “Tracer” could not surpass a two-digit figure. However, with the highest rating of 9%, “Tracer” is still MBC’s highest-rated drama so far in 2022.

Tomorrow (MBC) – 7.6%

The public channel drama with the highest premiere rating this year is MBC’s Tomorrow. Despite having a great start, the rating dramatically dropped by half in the second episode. After the first week, “Tomorrow” ratings maintained around 5% and failed to rise higher. Although the drama draws countless positive reactions thanks to its meaningful story, due to some unnecessary controversies during its run, the overall ratings failed to live up to episode 1.
