The possibility of Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim being dismissed early in the 2025/26 season is becoming increasingly likely after a shocking League Cup defeat.
According to The Times, Amorim could face the sack as early as September if United’s poor performances continue. On August 28, Manchester United were held to a 2-2 draw by Grimsby in regulation time before losing 11-12 in a dramatic penalty shootout.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher even warned that Amorim could be sacked this week if United lose their upcoming Premier League fixture. After opening the season with a 0-1 defeat to Arsenal and a 1-1 draw away at Fulham, United now face Burnley at Old Trafford in Round 3.
The Red Devils’ situation looks even more complicated with a tough September schedule that includes matches against Manchester City, Chelsea, and Brentford.

“Amorim needs a strong start right at the beginning of the season. If not, Sir Jim Ratcliffe the co-owner of United won’t hesitate to act. The likelihood of an early dismissal is very high,” Carragher emphasized.
With over £200 million spent in the transfer market, Manchester United have made a huge bet on this season. That pressure now falls squarely on Amorim, as Ratcliffe is known for his lack of patience with underperforming managers. Although Amorim signed a contract until 2027, the club’s poor run of form in the latter half of last season has already placed the Portuguese coach under heavy scrutiny.
