OSCAR 2022: From Youn Yuh-jung’s touching award, BTS’s surprise appearance to Will Smith’s on-stage violent action

The 94th Academy Awards have come to an end. “Dune” took the most trophies with six wins, and “CODA,” which was released on Apple TV+, was honored to win the “Best Picture”, a first for an OTT work.

Youn Yuh-jung

The 94th American Academy Awards ceremony was held at Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on Mar 27th (local time). Although no Korean actors and Korean works were nominated this year, Youn Yuh-jung, who won the first “Actress in a supporting role” award for a Korean actress for the movie “Minari” last year, attended the awards ceremony as a presenter.

Youn Yuh-jung was welcomed on the stage to present the “Actor in a supporting role” award. Youn Yuh-jung said, “I’m not a Hollywood actor, but I’m so happy to be back in Hollywood. Thank you very much.”

Youn Yuh-jung then said, “My mom said that people reap what they sow. I should have listened to my mother. I complained about the poor pronunciation of my name after receiving the award last year. However, when I came today and saw the names of the actors in the “Actor in a supporting role” category, all are not easy to pronounce. So, I apologize in advance,” she said, before announcing Troy Kotsur of “CODA” as the winner.

In particular, Youn Yuh-jung moved everyone by announcing Troy Kotsur’s name in sign language. Troy Kotsur is the first deaf male actor to win an Oscar.

BTS Oscar

In addition, another welcome face also appeared during the awards ceremony. It’s BTS. BTS appeared in a video with the phrase “Favorite Film Musical With BTS.” BTS RM said, “I watched ‘Coco’ three times and I cried a lot,” while V said, “Pixar is unbelievable.” Then j-hope said, “I like Disney movies. I really liked Aladdin.”

Jin then added, “Disney movies stimulate emotions so well,” and RM drew attention by cheering for Will Smith of “Aladdin.”

Will Smith

Finally, the actor who drew the most attention at the Academy Awards this year is Will Smith. Chris Rock appeared as a presenter and made a joke about the shaved hair of Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, “Jada, I love ya. ‘G.I Jane 2’, can’t wait to see it”. It seems like he was jokingly comparing Jada to the main character in “G.I Jane 2”, who is bald. Immediately after hearing that, Will Smith went up the stage and punched Chris Rock.

Even after sitting down, Will Smith still couldn’t hide his anger. He then shouted, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f*cking mouth”, making the whole Academy Awards ceremony hall freeze for a moment.

Nominated for the Best Actor for his performance in the movie “King Richard”, Will Smith was later honored with the award. After receiving the trophy, he shed tears and said, “In this moment, I am overwhelmed with emotion. I’m being called on in my life to love people, to protect people, and to be a river to my people. To do what we do, you gotta be able to take abuse, you gotta be able to have people talk crazy about you. And in this business, you gotta be able to have people disrespecting you. And you gotta smile and pretend like ‘that’s okay’”.

He then apologized, “I want to apologize to the Academy and all the colleagues and nominees”, adding, “I hope the Academy will invite me next year”.

Will Smith-Jada Pinkat Smith

Ahn Hyun-mo, the host of the Academy broadcast, explained, “Chris Rock’s joke was a little too much. Will Smith’s wife, Jada Smith, seems to be angry the moment he mentioned her hair. It is known that Jada Pinkett Smith is currently fighting against hair loss”.
