Most prominent Korean actress in the past year: versatile acting, Song Hye Kyo’s nightmare?

With various notable projects, this Korean actress has been taking over the Korean small screens and proving her talents. 

In the past year, Lim Ji Yeon is perhaps one of the most prominent actresses on the Korean small screen. In particular, from May 2022 until now, audiences have seen Lim Ji Yeon in four different dramas, including “Rose Mansion”, “Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area” Part 2, “The Glory”, and most recently, “Lies Hidden in My Garden.”

Through her various works, the public have praised Lim Ji Yeon’s acting as diverse and unique. In particular, in Netflix’s “Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area”, the actress portrayed Seoul, a fierce female mercenary that captivated the audience.

However, Lim Ji Yeon’s big breakthrough actually came in the form of her villainous role of Park Yeon Jin in “The Glory”. Here, the actress transformed into an unrepentant school bully, who turned the life of female lead Moon Dong Eun (Song Hye Kyo) into an endless nightmare. From Park Yeon Jin’s arrogance, madness and wickedness, to her slow fear, every range of emotion was portrayed by Lim Ji Yeon in an extremely authentic way.

Lim Ji Yeon made a strong impression with her cold and piercing gaze as the villain Park Yeon Jin in “The Glory.”

In fact, Lim Ji Yeon was so good at playing the villain, she unintentionally stirred up controversy. In particular, some viewers believed that during her school days, the actress herself had bullied others, leading to her being understand the character’s psychology to such an extent.

Of course, these are baseless claims, and if anything, they serve to prove Lim Ji Yeon’s prowess in acting. 

After “The Glory” starring Song Hye Kyo, the female actress is returning with “Lies Hidden in My Garden” starring Kim Tae Hee. While most viewers reported that they waited for the drama because it had Kim Tae Hee in it; nonetheless, when the series aired, it was Lim Ji Yeon who stole the scene. She plays Choo Sang Eun, a woman suffering frequent battery from her husband but has her own scheme.

With two promising performances in a row, Lim Ji Yeon is becoming a sought-after name. Though her current drama is only 2 episodes in, actress Lim has confirmed her next serial project.  

On August 10th, the “High Society” actress will return to the small screen for the third TV series of 2023 called “National Death Penalty Vote” (or “The Killing Voice”) on SBS. The drama is a hardboiled thriller starring Park Hae Jin, Park Sung Woong, and Lim Ji Yeon.

The series revolves around a mysterious figure called Gaetal who punishes despicable criminals who somehow escape the penalty of the law. Gaetal will mass-message citizens across the country to decide if the criminal is to be punished. If 50% of the vote cast agree, the figure will strike their verdict.

In the series, Lim Ji Yeon plays Joo Hyun, a female officer working at the Cyber Safety Bureau for five years. She works with Kim Moo Chan – the head of Team 1 of Southern Provincial Police Agency’s regional investigation unit – and Kwon Seok Joo – a legal scholar who turned himself in after personally killing the rapist of his eight-year-old daughter – in the pursuit of the mysterious figure behind the name Gaetal.
