In MBC’s Friday-Saturday drama “My Dearest” (written by Hwang Jin Young, directed by Kim Sung Yong and Cheon Soo Jin), Yoo Gil Chae (played by Ahn Eun Jin) reminds viewers of Scarlett O’Hara from “Gone with the Wind” in many ways. She possesses a captivating beauty that attracts numerous men in the village, and her personality is vibrant and strong. She was a delicate princess in the greenhouse, but she becomes resilient and cares for everyone around her during the war. The setup of realizing true feelings for a man (cousin in “Gone with the Wind”, closest friend in “My Dearest”) belatedly is also similar. Besides, the character Lee Jang Hyun (played by Nam Goong Min) shares similarities with Rhett Butler from “Gone with the Wind”.
Despite the challenges of standing out in a backdrop of typical historical nobility and flashy characters, Yoo Gil Chae’s charm began to shine as the story unfolded with the outbreak of war. The crisis in the drama turned into an opportunity. Yoo Gil Chae, who was not strong-willed, showed strong resilience and responsibility for her family and others when the situation became dire.
In episode 4 of “My Dearest”, which aired on August 12th, Yoo Gil Chae convinces the villagers to evacuate as smoke rises over the mountain, just as Lee Jang Hyun advised. She leads people to flee and later rushes into the mountains with 3 others, although they could not leave by boat due to the circumstances. She cleverly hides their footprints and erases traces to elude pursuers. She takes care of a woman in labor, showing her quick thinking and determination.
As the story unfolds, Yoo Gil Chae faces challenges and overcomes them, growing into a strong and capable woman. Her interactions with Lee Jang Hyun hint at a developing romantic line, raising anticipation for the upcoming episodes.
