On the August 2 episode of tvN’s weekend drama Law and The City (Episode 9), the story centered on conflicts involving Bae Moon-jung (Ryu Hye-young), Jo Chang-won (Kang Yoo-seok), and Ha Sang-gi (Im Sung-jae), leaving minimal screen time for leads Ahn Joo-hyung (Lee Jong-suk) and Kang Hee-ji (Moon Ga-young).

Although the couple was officially confirmed in the previous episode, their presence this time was reduced to minor scenes like eating together, with no further development. Since their romance tied up the decade-old Hong Kong backstory, their roles have diminished noticeably.
Instead, the episode focused on Bae Moon-jung considering resignation due to pregnancy, then rediscovering her passion through a new case. Ahn Joo-hyung offered her crucial advice, while her husband (Yoon Kyun-sang) supported her emotionally—until a sudden abdominal pain hinted at a possible miscarriage.
Meanwhile, Jo Chang-won questioned his role as a public defender after witnessing harsh punishment for a poor defendant and leniency for the wealthy. A new case involving school violence deepened his moral struggle. With pressure from his father to join the family business, he hinted that he might be leaving law behind.

Ha Sang-gi, encouraged to pursue a PhD after impressing a CEO, was deterred by academic limitations and his mother’s declining health.
The preview for the next episode showed continued legal conflicts, but no signs of the Ahn–Kang romance returning. Viewers expressed frustration online:
- Lee Jong-suk and Moon Ga-young barely had any screen time—it doesn’t feel like they’re the leads.
- Please give more focus to Ahn Joo-hyung and Kang Hee-ji’s relationship.
- They’re an official couple now, but their screen time is practically dust.
As the drama shifts away from its central romance, viewers are left wondering whether the main couple’s story is already over.
