JYP rookie group’s logo controversy: “Plagiarising MONSTA X” or “Just a common design”?

Netizens are arguing about the logo that is used in a video uploaded by JYP Entertainment to prepare for its new girl group debut.

On Nov 1st, JYP uploaded a logo film of its undisclosed rookie girl group through its official SNS, attracting the attention of K-pop fans both inside and outside of Korea.

In the released logo film, the alphabet “X” turned into an “H” on a black background, before merging into a single logo design. At the end of the video, the phrase “WE ARE ALL HEROES”, which appeared in the teaser on the 25th of last month, appeared once again, raising questions.

However, it is suspected that the logo released by JYP for its rookie group is similar to MONSTA X‘s second full-length album “WE ARE HERE” released in February 2019.

Netizens suggested that JYP might have plagiarized by posting on Twitter and online communities, saying, “It is rude of large companies to copy small and medium-sized company’s logos.”

According to this article, both phrases start with “WE ARE” and both of the logos also start with the alphabet “X”, which is too similar. In response, netizens responded, “I thought it was the same group logo,” “The color contrast + outline is too similar,” “It’s the same industry, but they don’t have any business morality.” However, there are also comments saying that they don’t think it’s plagiarism, saying “Isn’t this a common design?” “The middle line is completely different,” and “I think there’s an X and an H in the group name.”
