Actress Lee Ji-eun (IU) expressed her desire to attend the Cannes Film Festival one more time.
Ahead of the release of the movie “Broker (directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda), IU revealed her thoughts in an interview with SPOTV News at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Seoul on June 7th.
“Broker” is a movie that tells an unexpected and special journey of people who get associated with baby boxes. With “Broker”, her debut commercial film, being selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 75th Cannes Film Festival, IU also enjoyed the honor of being invited to the Cannes’s Red Carpet. In particular, Song Kang-ho, the male lead of “Broker”, became the first Korean actor to win Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival.
IU, who nervously said that she might have to try on 300 dresses to pick her Red Carpet dress in a video, recalled her first time appearing on the Red Carpet of Cannes, “I was just kidding. I actually tried 5 dresses”, adding, “I still hadn’t adjusted myself to the time difference at the scene (Red Carpet). Standing in a strange place, with a strange atmosphere, and surrounded by all foreign reporters, I felt like there was a hidden camera… like I was at a movie set.”
She added, “It was like a movie script. Even the appearance of senior actor Song Kang-ho enjoying the moment so much seemed like a movie to me”. IU then expressed her gratitude towards Song Kang-ho, “I relied on him a lot when attending Cannes. He has many experiences with Cannes. I kept asking ‘Sunbaenim, is this alright?’. Not only me but all the staff relied on him.”
At “Broker” World Premiere and Cannes’s closing ceremony Red Carpet events, Song Kang-ho drew attention as he was spotted stepping on IU’s dress twice.
IU said, “I heard that you have to wear a dress that has a little length to look better in photos,” adding, “I was afraid that I would interfere with other people’s background, so I hold my dress while moving around. The photos came out really pretty and I was satisfied, but I have decided to wear a short dress next time if I had another chance to step on the Red carpet before I died,” she said smilingly. Regarding the moment Song Kang-ho stepped on her dress, she laughed, saying, “The photo itself was really funny.”
“Broker” has emerged as a hot topic in Cannes after receiving a 12-minute standing ovation. IU also recalled the time when she was confused by the reaction, saying, “Song Kang-ho and Kore-eda are all experienced, so I think they were used to it, but Kang Dong-won and Lee Ju-young and I kept staring at each other and saying, ‘Shouldn’t someone finish this.'”
IU said, “I’m embarrassed by the zoom I’ve never received before. It was my first time, but it would be fake and impossible to do if I appeared too chilled,” she confessed. “There is a strange photo left of me making a very insecure heart,” she complained. IU agreed, “It was a real mistake. It was the worst thing I’ve ever done in Cannes. You have to be confident in everything you do. If I have another chance next time, I’ll do it confidently. I wrote it all down. I want to do it one more time before I die,” she said, adding a smile.
The movie “Broker” is the story of people who are involved in a special journey around the “Baby Box”. The movie is drawing attention as it topped the reservation rate chart ahead of its release on June 8th.
