Hyolyn Used R*cist Word, Issued Official Apology
After coming under criticism from international fans for her use of a r*cist word, Hyolyn has issued an official apology.
Recently, Hyolyn, who gained attention as a member of girl group SISTAR, published a video of herself on vacation.
In the video, the female idol can be seen singing along to a song playing in the background, and as a result mentioned the N-word – a term which carries r*cist connotations towards black people.
On top of this, Hyolyn used the n-word on Black History Month – a special month where people celebrate black people, their fight against discrimination, and their contributions to the world. As a result, Hyolyn quickly came under criticism, and a post regarding the issues gained massive attention with over 3.2 million views.
Hyolyn has since released an official apology, which was published on both her Instagram story on official X account.
In particular, the female idol wrote:
“Hello everyone, this is HYOLYN.
Yesterday, while singing along to a song that was playing in the background, I carelessly uttered a charged word with significant cultural and historical implications. I am deeply regretful and heartbroken to have hurt so many of you by my ignorance. I am sincerely sorry.
Please know that I love you all very much, and I thank you for keeping me accountable for my actions. I hope you will be there in my journey to educate myself more on cultures beyond my own, to grow not only as an artist, but as a person.
Thank you again for all your love and support.”
On the other hand, the use of the N-word has been a matter of controversy in K-pop numerous times, leading to black fans being constantly hurt.
BABYMONSTER’s Ahyeon, for instance, was previously criticized for using the slur in a past performance, whilst aespa’s Giselle also came under fire for singing along to a song with the word.
