Actor Ahn Bo-hyun has boasted opposite hot and cold charms by playing Goo Woong in Tving’s original “Yumi’s Cells” and Netflix’s original “My Name”.
“Yumi’s Cells” tells a cell-stimulating relatable romance of an ordinary girl – Yumi (Kim Go-eun), who eats, loves, and grows with the cells. The drama is based on a webtoon of the same name and Ahn Bo-hyun played the role of Goo Woong. He perfectly portrayed the appearance of Goo Woong with a beard and long hair, which are his trademark, showing off the visual of “a man coming out from Manhwa (Korean comic books)”.
Ahn Bo-hyun is waking up the viewers’ love cells by showing how clumsy and rational Goo Woong is while in love with Yumi then changes himself. In addition, he became an “anger causer” by giving frustrating feedbacks between his female friend Saeyi (Park Ji-hyun) and Yumi. He is also challenging himself with a romantic comedy for the first time since his debut with his own charm.
On the other hand, in “My Name,” which was released on October 15, the actor played the criminal Jeon Pil-do, who has charmed the viewers with his different charisma. Jeon Pil-do is the partner of Jiwoo (Han So-hee), who pretends to be a police to find the culprit who killed her father, and also the ace of the drug investigation team. He grumbles with Jiwoo in the team but trusts his partner until the end. In addition, he also comforts Jiwoo, who has lived a lonely life since her father died and has some romantic chemistry with her. Former boxer Ahn Bo-hyun delicately expressed the emotional changes felt by Jeon Pil-do with intense action scenes, enhancing the immersion of fans to the drama. His visual shown with excellent physical strength is also indispensable.
In an interview held on November 18th, “My Name” director Kim Jin-min said about Ahn Bo-hyun, “He prepares steadily and really thinks about it.” “He is an actor who is like a hard-working student and has a very good attitude,” he praised.
Ahn Bo-hyun was a boxer turned model/actor. He came up step by step from the minor roles, building his own drama career by appearing in works such as Descendants of the Sun, Her Private Life, and Dokgo Rewind. Later, he played the role of Jang Geun-won in JTBC’s “Itaewon Class” (2020) and made an impression on viewers for his brutal villain acting. After that, he appeared on MBC’s “Kairos” (2020) and perfectly performed thriller scenes.
Ahn Bo-hyun, a late-bloomed actor, is challenging himself with various roles regardless of genre, from romantic comedies to actions. Expectations are high for Ahn Bo-hyun to show his growth in his career.
