(G)I-DLE: Flopped with Expensive MV but Perfect All-Kill with B-Side?

Girl group (G)I-DLE is experiencing unexpected successes with a B-side song despite their title not doing well.

Recently, “Fate”, an unpromoted B-side song from (G)I-DLE’s latest album, quietly dominated the Korean digital music charts to achieve an “all-kill” record.

From being an unnoticed song first introduced through the group’s live stage performance on “Lee Hyori’s Red Carpet” show, “Fate” has made an impressive surge on digital charts, now ranking highest among songs from (G)I-DLE’s latest album, surpassing both the pre-release single “Wife” and the title track “Super Lady.”

Previously, the MV for “Super Lady” was revealed to have a staggering production cost of 1.1 billion won, with half of it being covered by (G)I-DLE members themselves. In the end, this MV was praised for its grandeur and visually stunning aspects, but due to “Super Lady” having a strong, loud, and rather complex musical composition, it did not do as well as (G)I-DLE’s previous title.

Ever since, “Super Lady” has witnessed declines on charts, leading to opinions that (G)I-DLE is experiencing a “flop comeback”. However, this was proven wrong as “Fate” continue to rise.

(G)I-DLE performed “Fate” live on “Lee Hyori’s Red Carpet”.

It is known that Soyeon previously considered picking “Fate” as the title instead of “Super Lady”, and her vision at the time has been recognized. The song, with its well-balanced line distribution, catchy melody, and addictive rhythm, has won the public’s favor despite minimal promotion activities.

According to the latest updates, “Fate” has excellently achieved a Perfect All-Kill, securing the #1 position on Korean music charts -both daily and real-time, including MelOn, Genie, Bugs, and Flo.

As a result, (G)I-DLE has become the first gen 4 girl group to top the MelOn chart for three consecutive years.

Additionally, (G)I-DLE has become first K-pop girl group to have achieve Perfect All-Kills in 4 consecutive comebacks (with “TOMBOY”, “Nxde”, “Queencard”, and “FATE”.

Seizing the momentum, (G)I-DLE has started promoting “Fate”.

At the same time, the melody of “Fate” is also going viral in Korea and China through various dance challenge clips, especially the humorous diss version created by member Yuqi herself.

With the unexpected success of “Fate,” many fans joke that indeed, (G)I-DLE is “unique”: as their billion-won MV did not do as well as a completely unpromoted B-side.

CUBE Entertainment has announced that (G)I-DLE will start promoting “Fate” this week.
