From Jennie to Jang Wonyoung, Top Idols’ Professionalism Shines Through Despite Injuries

The stories of idols who still perform despite their injuries are belatedly spreading.

BLACKPINK Jennie has been criticized for “lazy dancing” in the past. Although she has not directly addressed this criticism, she clarified her stance during her recent appearance on Dua Lipa’s BBC podcast.

Jennie explained that she often got injured while dancing with high heels on. She said, “I kept getting hurt during performances. It was a stressful experience. I fell and fell again. It seemed like I wasn’t doing my best, which disappointed the fans.”

She added, “I didn’t know how to control my body. Since the pandemic, I have learned to take care of myself.

Some fans may have doubts about Jennie’s dancing skills compared to her past performances. However, in reality, Jennie had to overcome the discomfort of wearing difficult high heels while performing on stage.

The professionalism of IVE Jang Wonyoung has also become a hot topic. Director Son Seung Hee, who directed IVE’s MV for “I AM,” recently appeared on a radio show and expressed her gratitude to Jang Wonyoung.

Director Son stated, “I have never officially mentioned this. During the MV shoot, Jang Wonyoung injured her arm while dancing, so she had to get 7 stitches.

At that time, Jang Wonyoung still had her scenes left to film. Although it would have been understandable to postpone filming until she fully recovered from the injury, Jang Wonyoung went to the emergency room for two days and completed the remaining MV scenes after getting her arm stitched up. Director Son added, “What was even more impressive was that she didn’t show any signs of difficulty on set.

This is the second time Jang Wonyoung’s injury has been made known. Previously, she injured her knee while performing the stage for “That’s My Girl” at the Welcome K-Pop Click Concert in January last year. Despite bleeding from the wound, Jang Wonyoung went on to finish her next stage.

It is not mandatory for idols to demonstrate a “professional” appearance despite their injuries. Recovery should take priority if they are injured. However, these idols ultimately delivered their performances through their passion for the stage, alleviating their fans’ concerns.

Of course, the agency’s care for artists should be ensured. Recently, there has been an increase in cases where idols have suspended their activities due to poor health. Some attribute this to their packed schedules. There is a need to prevent artists’ injuries and make efforts to improve the working environment.
